I Women: Indiana Takes The Lead After Day 3 at Big 10 Champs

ANN ARBOR, Mich., Feb. 22. ANOTHER day, another new leader.

After Day 1 of the Big 10 women's meer here, Coach Eric Hansen's Wisconsin Badgers were in the lead. After yesterday's splashing was concluded, it was
Penn State's Badgers occupying the top spot. Tonight, after Day 3, it's Coach Dorsey Tierney's Indiana Hoosiers who're No. 1.

Indiana, which has never won a Big 10 women's title, tops the standings with 429 points, followed closely by Penn State's 416. Wisconsin remains third (323) while Coach Jim Richardson's Michigan Wolverines — defending champs — are fourth.

Indiana won a pair of races and in one, the 400 IM, scored a one-two-three sweep. Their other win was by senior Susan Woesner in the 100 back (53.60).

Penn State scored a double when Corrie Clark (100 fly) and Kristen Woodring (100 breast) each won for the second consecutive season. The other win went to Wisconsin frosh Carly Piper (200 free), who won the 500 free the previous evening.

Soph Broke Taflinger got the Hoosiers rolling with her pr 4:16.78 (NCAA "A" cut) to win the 400 IM. Her time was just off the pool record of 4:16.60 by USC's Kristine Quance in 1996.

The Big 10 record is 4:11.39 by Michigander Mindy Gehrs that won her the 1993 NCAA title.

Indiana's Kristy Martin (4:18.58) and Tina Gretlund (4:18.59) completed the sweep while Penn State's 200 IM champ, Erin Mulshenock, was fourth (4:18.96).

The 100 fly saw Clark win in 54.35, not far off the meet record of 54.21 and the Big 10 meet record of 54.13 by Wisconsin's Gina Panighetti. Rookie Erin
Smith was Indiana's only finalist here with a 55.15, good for fifth.

Clarke's pr is 54.06 from last year's NCAAs.

Piper's second pr of the meet (she went 4:43.21 in the 500) won the 200 free (1:47.41). Her time was about a second off the meet record of 1:46.37 by Michigan's Shannon Shakespeare, a Canadian Olympian, from two seasons ago. The Wisconsin ace will have to step up the pace a bit if she wants to get the all-time Big 10 record, however, as that's a 1:45.88 by Badger Ellen
Stonebraker from last season's NCAA finals.

Piper's 200 time is also an NCAA auto cut. Runner-up, Minnnesota's Dana Baum, did a 1:48.64 but was top qualifier with a pr 1:47.94.

Woodring "cruised" to a 1:01.15 100 breast win, but Purdue's Lindsay Lange made her work as she touched second a mere .02 behind at 1:01.17. Woodring led
throughout (13.28-13.32, 28.61-28.79, 44.78-44.82) but Lange will have a chance for evening the score next month in Austin (NCAA Championships). Her time is a pr and Boilermaker record.

In the evening's finale, Hoosier Woesner went a 53.60 to win the 100 backstroke, just .01 off her Big 10 and Big 10 meet-record of 53.59 that she did while leading off the Hoossier's 400 medley relay Thursday night.

Her 53.59 is good for fourth nationally in the latest CSCAA/www.swiminfo.com rankings, and moves her into 13th on the all-time performers' list. Purdue's Lisa Dolansky (54.91) was second, followed by Wisconsin junior Sarah McCauley (55.77).

Woesner's time is of course an NCAA auto cut and a very impressive performacne by the Hoosier senior.

Only three schools — Michigan (12), Ohio State (6) and Minnesota (2) — have won Big 10 titles since the meet's beginning in 1982.

All three have won men's titles too, with Michigan and Ohio State having won more championships over the years than Catter has pills. Minnesota is defending men's Big 10 champ and will have a chance to repat
when their meet is held next week.

Will Indiana crash the party manana?

Stay tuned.

— Bill Bell

2002 WOMEN'S BIG TEN SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
CANHAM NATATORIUM
UNIVERSITY OF MICHIGAN
ANN ARBOR, MI., FEB. 22

Place School Points
1 Indiana University IND 429
2 Penn State University PSU 416.5
3 University of Wisconsin WISC 323
4 University of Michigan MICH 255
5 Purdue University PURD 239.5
6 Northwestern University NW 233.5
7 University of Illinois ILL 200
8 University of Iowa IOWA 197
9 University of Minnesota MINN 170
10 Michigan State University MSU 99.5
11 The Ohio State University OSU 95

Results

Event 9 Women 400 Yard IM
===============================================================================
CONFERENCE: * 4:11.39 1993 MINDY GEHRS
MEET: !
