THE Australian world championship team is gathered in Brisbane in the weeks before the world championships to participate in a special time trial. Not everyone is swimming at top form, obviously as they get ready for taper, but a few people did stand out. Cate Campbell swam a 53.38 in the 100 free, faster than anyone has swum this year. She now has swum the four fastest 100 freestyles of 2013. James Magnussen, the lone Australian going into the world championships as reigning champion, put up a respectable 48.50 in the 100 free, a second off from his best of the year but a strong in-season swim. The time trial will have two more sessions this weekend, and we&#039;ll bring you results on swimmingworld.com.<\/p>\n<p>The British world championships begins Wednesday in Sheffield, and like the United States will on Tuesday, the country will be looking to move on after the retirement of its biggest swimming star. With Rebecca Adlington announcing her retirement last February, we&#039;ll look to see who can be the next leader of a team that didn&#039;t have the best home Olympics. Michael Jamieson is a likely choice, having won silver in the 200 breast at the Olympics. There&#039;s also Liam Tancock, who is the reigning world champion in the 50 back and a proven veteran of the team. On the women&#039;s side, Hannah Miley is likely to be the top British representative in the individual medley events at worlds, especially with her silver medal in the 400 IM from 2011. Fran Halsall is also going to be one to watch in the sprint freestyles, and should have no problem qualifying for the world championship team.
