That&#8217;s a quick run-down of the 2018 Golden Coast Conference <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gccwaterpolo.com\/article\/835.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">pre-season coaches poll<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><em>Swimming World<\/em> is not one to deviate too much; there&#8217;s no question that Pacific is the class of the conference. The international players\u2014Duarte from Brazil; Christmas from Canada\u2014are the Tigers top two scorers in last season, a trend that should continue. But the fate of Head Coach <strong>James Graham\u2019s<\/strong> squad likely rests in the hands of <strong>Samantha Pfaff<\/strong>. The red-shirt senior will get first shot at replacing the now-graduated <strong>Alexis Hollinrake<\/strong>, who made all the starts in the Pacific cage in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>If Pfaff is not up to the task, there&#8217;s freshman <strong>Clara Vulpisi<\/strong>, who has already competed internationally with the Canadian Senior National team. More firepower is available from <strong>Viktoria Szmodics<\/strong> (30 goals; 54 points) and <strong>Viktoria Tamas<\/strong> (42 points) and Graham always recruits well; including Vulspi he\u2019s brought in eight freshmen as well as <strong>Emma Myall<\/strong>, a junior transfer. Senior <strong>Maura Cantoni<\/strong> will again be in the cage for Head Coach <strong>Carin Crawford<\/strong>; last year she racked up 229 saves.<\/p>\n<p>The question is: how much has the rest of the GCC changed? Throw in a stellar effort by <strong>Abbey Grosse<\/strong>\u201434 goals and a team-high 38 assists\u2014good for 72 points\u2014and it adds up to a fantastic season by the Lions, one that saw them in the GCC championship match for the first time since they won back-to-back titles in 2014-15.<\/p>\n<p>The loss to Pacific in last year\u2019s title tilt will not dampen the spirits of the LMU faithful, but losing Wright (296 saves, 5.63 GAA) may impact the Lion\u2019s fortunes. A key addition is the arrival of <strong>Marialena Seletopoulou<\/strong> (110 goals in 2018) from Greece by way of St. Francis University. Having <strong>Kira O\u2019Donnell<\/strong> (team-high 58 goals and 92 points\u2014Golden Coast Conference Newcomer of the Year in 2018), senior <strong>Lizette Perez<\/strong> (41 goals, 42 assists, 2018 All-GCC 1st Team) and junior goalie <strong>Grace Ramirez<\/strong> return is a great foundation for Head Coach <strong>Jonathan Miller<\/strong> to build on, as he looks to improve on a program-best third place finish in the GCC.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore <strong>Vicky Ochoa<\/strong> chipped in with 22 goals, but Miller will need to find offense to replace <strong>Annie Eubanks<\/strong> (33 goals) and <strong>Allie Coleman<\/strong> (40 assists for 67 points)\u2014both of whom graduated. He\u2019s got six freshman he can look to; the most heralded of which is <strong>Kinga Wisniewska<\/strong>, who competed internationally for Canada\u2019s 17U team. After going a noteworthy 7-18 in season one, the question is: how high can the Bulldogs leap in season two?<\/p>\n<p><strong>Callie Woodruff<\/strong> chipped in 47 goals\u00a0to lead all Fresno State scorers, while <strong>Emily Nicholson<\/strong> scored 36. Coach <strong>Natalie Benson<\/strong> added seven freshmen to her roster of sophomores and juniors; Woodruff, Nicholson and <strong>Sydney Coachman<\/strong> (27 points) are the leading returners, as is goalie Madelynn Garcia (132 saves; 10.58 GAA).<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/five-questions-for-natalie-benson-head-womens-water-polo-coach-at-fresno-state\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>[Five Questions for Natalie Benson, Head Women\u2019s Water Polo Coach at Fresno State]<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Among the newcomers, <strong>Daphne Guerremont<\/strong>\u2014a Canadian junior national team player\u2014and <strong>Sara Parson<\/strong>, a junior transfer from Santa Barbara City College, will help kick-start the Fresno State offense.
