NASHVILLE, Tennessee, June 14. AT the location of her in-season best in the 100-meter fly, Olympian Claire Donahue came within half-a-second of catching that time this evening as the Nashville Aquatics' Summer Sizzler kicked off.<\/p>\n
Donahue, who earned an Olympic gold medal as a preliminary heat member of the women's 400-meter medley relay at the 2012 London Games, had a final tune up this weekend heading into the home stretch toward the U.S. World Championship Trials at the end of the month in Indianapolis. <\/p>\n
This evening, Donahue clocked a 59.31 to win the 100-meter fly, after touching in 59.83 this morning. That's half-a-second off her 2011 time from this meet of 58.73 that stands as her in-season best. Her best time this season was a 58.83 from the Charlotte stop of the Arena Grand Prix.<\/p>\n
In what had to be a thrill for the hometown swimmer, NAC's Carrie Johnson, 16, finished second to the gold medalist in 1:02.38. EST's Katelyn Sowinski, bound for Penn State, earned third in 1:03.02. <\/p>\n
Another swimmer who tends to do well at this meet, Nashville's Maclin Davis, smocked the men's 100-meter fly with a winning time of 54.86. His in-season best is also from the 2011 edition of this meet, a 53.65 at the time. He also clocked a 54.02 last year, and is rounding back into long course form after being a freshman at the University of Southern California this past year. Reece Boyd (56.07) and Neal Rushing (58.35) took second and third behind Davis. <\/p>\n
In other action, EST's Erin Dunseith topped the women's 200-meter free in 2:03.72, while Hannah Musser (2:06.41) and Sowinski (2:06.85) took second and third. Ben Scheffer won the men's 200-meter free in 1:57.22 with Ben Lawless (1:58.11) and Taylor Charles (1:58.57) taking second and third. <\/p>\n
Donahue's training partner at Western Kentucky, Allie Duff, topped the women's 50-meter back in 30.69. Annie Kyriakidis, just 14 from Nashville Aquatics, took second in 31.12. Teammate Michelle Chintanaphol earned third in 31.55. Chatham Dobbs beat out Scheffer in the men's 50-meter back, 27.46 to 27.86, while Chris Goodman placed third in 29.02. <\/p>\n
Another WKU swimmer, Claire Conlon, picked off Geordie Enoch, 1:14.27 to 1:14.43, to win the women's 100-meter breast. Maddie Hoff of Nashville placed third in 1:14.67. Alex Goss (1:06.75), Tarik Lott (1:07.46) and Isaac Powell (1:09.35) made up the top three in the men's 100-meter breast. <\/p>\n
Enoch countered in the women's 400-meter IM with a 4:57.20 for the win. Duff placed a distant second in 5:04.85 after winning the 50 back earlier in the evening. Chintanaphol snared third in 5:06.06. Charles went from third in the 200 free to a win in the 400-meter IM with a 4:31.27.
