DEFENDING champions dominated the opening day of the Michigan Intercollegiate Athletic Association (MIAA) swimming and diving championships which are being held at the Holland Community Aquatic Center.<\/p>\n<p>The three-day meet continues today and Saturday with prelims at 10 a.m. and the finals at 6 p.m.<\/p>\n<p>The Hope Flying Dutch are in first place in the women&#39;s standings, leading defending champion Calvin 198-159, followed by Kalamazoo 81, Alma 67, Saint<br \/>\nMary&#39;s 63, Albion 50 and Olivet 34.<\/p>\n<p>Defending champion Kalamazoo leads the men&#39;s field with 224 points, followed by Hope 161, Calvin 94, Albion 70, Alma 56 and Olivet 18.<\/p>\n<p>Defending champions repeated in five of Thursday&#39;s eight individual events.<\/p>\n<p>In the men&#39;s meet, Hope junior Tim DeHaan defended his championship in the 50-yard freestyle with a pool record time of :20.92. His time was also a provisional qualifying performance for the NCAA Division III nationals next month.<\/p>\n<p>Kalamazoo had two defending champions repeat in the men&#39;s meet, diver Tim Ullrey on the one-meter board and J.D. Schneider in the 500-yard freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#39;s meet, Hope sophomore Michelle Smith successfully defended her championship in the 500-yard freestyle with an NCAA provisional qualifying time (5:09.78) while Calvin&#39;s Katie Nagelkirk repeated as champion with an MIAA record time (24.03) and national qualifying performance in the 50 free.<\/p>\n<p>Sophomore Audrey Arnold won the 200-yard individual medley (2:12.78).<\/p>\n<p>Hope qualified its men&#39;s 400-yard medley relay for nationals with an MIAA record time (3:23.13). The relay was comprised of junior Ian Kobes of Holland,<br \/>\nsenior Josh Boss, junior Dan Bouwens and Brian Slagh of Zeeland.<\/p>\n<p>The Flying Dutchmen also won the 200-yard freestyle relay with a pool record (1:23.49) and provisional national qualifying performance. The relay members were freshman Jeff Vroegindewey, freshman Jeff Heydlauff, Brian Slagh and Tim DeHaan.<\/p>\n<p>Hope and Calvin split the women&#39;s relays. The Knights captured the 200-yard freestyle relay with a national qualifying time (1:36.82) using the team of Katie Nagelkirk, Kaity Conrad, Brittney Stevens and Erin Kloostra. The Flying Dutch had a provisional national qualifying time in winning the 400-yard medley relay (4:01.82) with a team of Audrey Arnold, Kelly Parker, Elizabeth Fredericks and Erika Steele.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>HOLLAND, Mich., Feb. 21.
