PHOENIX, Arizona, June 11. UNIVERSITY of South Carolina head swim coach McGee Moody was named to the coaching staff for the American team headed to this summer's World University Games in Kazan, Russia. He replaces Rich DeSelm, the head swim coach at the University of North Carolina.<\/p>\n
In a conversation with Swimming World today, DeSelm said, “I had some surgery and I just don't feel like it would be wise to go that far away from home at this point. I look forward to the next opportunity I have to represent the United States national team.”<\/p>\n
For Moody, this marks his first international coaching gig for USA Swimming. He's been building the Gamecocks at South Carolina to a national powerhouse since arriving in 2007. Michael Flach competed in the final of the 200 butterfly at the 2012 U.S. Olympic Trials, while Amanda Rutqvist won the 200 breast at the 2011 Southeastern Conference championships and made the NCAA final.<\/p>\n
“It's a great honor to be asked to represent the U.S. on the international stage,” Moody said. “I give a lot of credit to our staff here at South Carolina. It has helped elevate this program to where this is a reality. I look forward to going over to Russia and helping the team in whatever way possible.”<\/p>\n
Moody will be a part of the men's coaching staff in Russia, a list that includes team head coach Mike Bottom from Michigan and assistants Kelly Kremer of Minnesota and Rick DeMont of Arizona.
