IT'S not too early to begin thinking about a trip to the capital of Greece in a couple of years, and that's exactly what Amanda Weir, Ashley Daly, Eric Shanteau and Melissa Klein are no doubt mulling after their performances at the Georgia state 5A high school championships this weekend.

Weir, a sophomore at Brookwood in suburban Atlanta, won the 100 free in 50.03 (third nationally) and then swam a state-record/pr 1:49.88 to take the 200 free title.

As a ninth-grader last season Weir went 50.68 (eighth-quickest) and 1:51.13 (24th). She also holds the national age-group 13-14 record in the 100 free
at 49.53 from a holiday invitational at Mecklenburg, NC in December of 2000.

In addition, Weir has a pr of 22.88 in the 50 free from the American Short Course Championships at Austin the previous March, a meet she may well compete in again next month. A product of the SwimAtlanta program, she is developing into one of America's fastest young sprinters.

Daly, a senior at Parkview High, won the 200 IM in a pr and state-record 2:01.17. Her time ranks her second nationally behind Columbus North's Leah Retrum's list-leading 2:00.33, done earlier this month in Indianapolis at the Indiana state championships.

Daly didn't earn All-American honors last season in the IM but as a sophomore during the 1999-2000 season she ranked 13th nationally with a 2:03.63. However, she was an All-America last season in the 100 breast,
where she was 23rd (1:04.51).

On last season's 17-18 NAG list she would have ranked fourth in the IM and on the all-time NAG list she's 26th.

Perhaps the most impressive swim of the meet was by her Parkview teammate, senior Eric Shanteau, who went an eye-opening 1:47.86 for the 200 IM — a state record. That time is fastest nationally, one of the fastest high school IMs of all-time, and less than a second off the national-record of 1:46.90 by former University of Michigan All-America jason Lancaster. Lancaster set the standard at the 1994 Indiana state meet while swimming for Carmel High.

Shanteau was 1:50.42 last season and ranked fifth nationally. The leader was Dan Trupin of Champaign Central (IL) with a 1:48.15, so Shanteau's well on his way to a possible No. 1 national ranking when the final stats are released this summer.

Trupin is now a freshman at Stanford.

Shanteau also won the 100 back (50.85, automatic All-America) and ranks ninth nationally. Last season he was 52.17 and was a consideration AA.

Milton senior Melissa Klein, who represents Dynamo Swim Club, won the 100 breast in 1:03.24 — automatic Al-America but slower than her state-record 1:02.19 from last season. Klein ranked third on the 15-16 NAG list in 2000-'01 in the 100 breast with that 1:02.19. She was first in the 200 (2:12.67) and has cut her pr down to 2:12.59 at the Eastern Classic last month in Atlanta.

Some other fast times included Parkview's Mike Kauffman's 4:29.06 500 free (sixth nationally), his 1:40.91 200 free (ninth), and the Parkview 400 free
relay (3:08.22, third).

On the girls' sisde, Centennial's Claire Maust's 4:54.29 500 is an automatic All-America cut, as was Brookwood's Christine Hopman's 57.25 100 back and
Klein's 100 breast. Brookwood's 3:29.07 400 free relay ranks them fourth nationally and is an A auto time.

— Bill Bell

2002 GEORGIA HIGH SCHOOL SWIMMING & DIVING CHAMPIONSHIPS
WESTMINSTER ACADEMY
DUNWOODY, GA., FEB. 16

25 Yd.
