In his announcement, Shoults noted that he had been battling chronic pain for the last three months.<\/p><p>Shoults posted the following message on Twitter,<\/p><blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\r\n<p>After 3 months of battling chronic pain, I underwent successful shoulder surgery. Thank you to my family, friends, teammates, coaching staff, athletic trainers, Dr. Geoff Abrams, the Stanford Medical staff, USA Swimming, and Dr. Warren Kramer as well as the Kramer family in their never ending support and dedication to my mental and physical health.<\/p>\r\n<p>I am excited to go through everyday life eventually pain free with the ultimate goal at getting back to the competitive level I was at in the water. Everything happens for a reason and this is just a testament to God&#8217;s plan. I am sure that this bump in the road will allow me to grow as an individual and as an athlete.<\/p>\r\n<p>As always, I will continue being my Stanford teammates&#8217; biggest fan as we continue striving for our goals together in and out of the water.<\/p>\r\n<p>Go Card! This was his first time representing Team USA at a major international meet. Previously, he had been a member of Team USA at the 2014 Junior Pan Pacific Championships and the 2015 FINA World Junior Championships.<\/p><p>Shoults has been a member of the Stanford Cardinal for two and a half years now and made an immediate impact when he arrived.
