THE 2012-2013 high school season had its last hurrah last weekend, with two national records broken and another one close to falling. We want to give props to Clark Smith for getting within four hundredths of a second of the national record in the 100 fly and Carondelet for breaking the girls&#039; 400 free national record, but the performance of the week came in the finals of the boys&#039; 100 breaststroke at the California North Coast section championships on Saturday in Concord, California.<\/p>\n<p>Not in recent memory has a national high school record been broken by more than one swimmer in the same heat, but that&#039;s what happened when Steven Stumph, Charlie Wiser and Nick Silverthorn touched the wall in the final. Stumph won the race with a 53.39, and Wiser was right behind with a 53.57. Silverthorn was third with a 53.61. All three swam faster than Patrick Fowler&#039;s national record of 53.66 set in 1998. All three went under 54 seconds for the first time last weekend, with Stumph doing it first in prelims with a 53.67.<\/p>\n<p>Stumph and Wiser will go into their freshmen years at the University of Southern California and Stanford University, respectively, with big expectations, while all eyes will be on Silverthorn next May, when he will be a high school senior.<\/p>\n<p>Congratulations to Steven, Charlie and Nick.
