WESTWOOD, Feb. 16. IS this any way to prepare to defend a championship?<\/p>\n

UCLA's women's swim team, defending Pac-10 champs, lost their third-consecutive dual meet to USC during the '00s, losing here at home 167-144.<\/p>\n

The loss was also UCLA's fifth in conference action, giving the Bruins an 0-5 record going into the Pac-10 Championships the end of the month.<\/p>\n

SC's Pac-10 record isn't that much better either as the Trojans have only defeated UCLA.<\/p>\n

SC won 11 of 16 events, including both relays.<\/p>\n

SC's winners included Asa Sundland in the 1650 free and Melissa Deary in the 500 free. British Olympian Joanna Fargus swept both backstrokes, senior Kristin McGregor won the 100 breast, frosh Kaitlin Sandeno the 200 fly, divers Blythe Hartley and Kellie Brennan the 1- and 3-meter boards and junior Michala Kwasny the 400 IM.<\/p>\n

UCLA scored wins by Swedish frosh import Malin Svahnstrom in the 200 free and 100 fly, Austrian Olympian Elvira Fischer in the 200 breast, frosh Jenny Hall (50 free) and soph Sara Platzer (100 free).<\/p>\n

UCLA's record is somewhat deceiving as the Bruins have a talented squad. Platzer set a school record in the 100 free, Svahnstrom in the 200-free-200 IM and Fischer is a very talented breaststroker who'll open
\nmore than a few eyes at Pac-10s. Soph Brooke Winkler has the potential to final in several events at Pac-10s (including both IMs), as does sprinter-flyer Kristen Lewis and senior breaststroker Jen Noodle.<\/p>\n

So contrary to talk on the deck, the Bruins are far from "being in ruins."<\/p>\n
