SARASOTA, Florida, May 21. U.S. Masters Swimming has joined the fray to lower the drowning rate in the United States by offering grants to programs that teach adults to swim the length of a pool.<\/p>\n

Through the USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation, more than $20,000 was given to five organizations in 2012. Organizations can receive grants of up to $5,000. The deadline to submit applications for grants in 2013 is June 1.<\/p>\n

According to U.S. Masters Swimming, only 37 percent of adults can swim the length of the pool, despite swimming being the number one physical activity adults say they aspire to do more than any other sport.<\/p>\n

With USA Swimming's Make a Splash initiative putting a strong focus on teaching children how to swim, the USMS Swimming Saves Lives Foundation completes the spectrum of getting more involved with the sport — and participating safely.<\/p>\n
