CONCORD, California, May 17. STEVEN Stumph put on a show in today’s prelims at the California Interscholastic Federation’s North Coast Sectional Championships, tying Brendan Hansen’s national public high school record in the 100 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
Stumph, a senior at Campolindo High School, posted a blistering 53.67 to equal Hansen’s mark from 2000. Naturally, it’s Stumph’s best time, with a 54.06 from last year’s sectional finals previously standing as his lifetime best. He was oh-so-close to the overall national high school record, a 53.66 from Patrick Fowler in 1998 that stands as the independent national high school mark as well.<\/p>\n
Stumph will go after Fowler’s record in tomorrow’s finals, and will try to post a win in the 100 butterfly as well. Stumph, who will attend the University of Southern California in the fall, posted a 47.91, also a lifetime best.<\/p>\n
Cheslea Chenault put up an impressive 200 freestyle prelim swim today, topping qualifying with a 1:44.98. Chenault’s lifetime best is a 1:44.12from last year’s high school championships. Chenault had owned the national independent national high school record in the 200 free with a 1:45.14, until Missy Franklin broke it in February 2012. Now, the independent record stands at 1:42.96 by Katie Ledecky.<\/p>\n
Celina, the 2012 winter national champion in the 200 IM, put up a solid 200 IM today, qualifying first with a 1:58.92. Her best time is a 1:55.28, swum at the winter nationals, and is just a shade off Ella Eastin’s new record of 1:55.15 set last weekend.<\/p>\n
