KEITH Carter, who won a medal as a member of the 1948 U.S. Olympic swimming team, passed away last Friday at age 88.<\/p>\n<p>Carter received the silver medal in the 200-meter breaststroke at the 1948 Olympics in London and also was NCAA champion in the event as a member of the Purdue swim team in 1949. His time at Purdue was preceded by a stint in the Air Force, where he was a bombardier during World War II.<\/p>\n<p>According to an article in the Asheville Citizen-Times, Carter was also a Masters swimmer, breaking the world record in the 100 short course meters fly in the 65-69 age group in 1990 with a 1:24.43.<\/p>\n<p>Carter is survived by his wife of 66 years, Helen Andersen Carter; two sons and a daughter; and nine grandchildren and their families, including two great-grandchildren. <\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.legacy.com\/obituaries\/citizen-times\/obituary.aspx?n=keith-carter&#038;pid=164665380#fbLoggedOut target=\"_blank\">Full text of Carter obituary in Asheville Citizen-Times<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>ASHEVILLE, North Carolina, May 7.
