{"id":343358,"date":"2018-12-20T08:21:14","date_gmt":"2018-12-20T15:21:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=343358"},"modified":"2019-04-11T11:14:41","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T18:14:41","slug":"adam-peaty-to-fina-i-dont-care-ban-me-if-youve-got-to-in-support-of-international-swim-league","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-to-fina-i-dont-care-ban-me-if-youve-got-to-in-support-of-international-swim-league\/","title":{"rendered":"Adam Peaty to FINA: &#8220;I Don&#8217;t Care, Ban Me If You&#8217;ve Got To,&#8221; In Support of International Swim League"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Great Britain&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Adam Peaty\u00a0<\/strong>has been very vocal about his support for the International Swim League (ISL), even with the likes of FINA, the world governing body of the sport of swimming, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-to-swim-in-energy-for-swim-meet-despite-threat-of-suspension\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">threatening to ban<\/a> him and other athletes who decided to take part in a non-sanctioned event.<\/p>\n<p>But according to\u00a0<em>BBC Sport<\/em>, Peaty is unafraid of the consequences for backing the ISL.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;I don&#8217;t care, ban me if you&#8217;ve got to,&#8221; Peaty told BBC Sport.<\/span><\/strong><\/p>\n<p><strong><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;I&#8217;m not bothered because at the end of the day they know they can&#8217;t.&#8221;<\/span><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>The 23-year-old Olympic, world, Commonwealth and European champion added: &#8220;They can&#8217;t get away with it because you&#8217;ll lose all of the respect from the athletes and you can&#8217;t bully them.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Many other high profile swimmers have backed Peaty, including World Champion\u00a0<strong>Emily Seebohm\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Olympic silver medalist\u00a0<strong>Maddie Groves\u00a0<\/strong>of Australia, and Olympic Champions\u00a0<strong>Sarah Sjostrom\u00a0<\/strong>of Sweden and\u00a0<strong>Chad Le Clos\u00a0<\/strong>of South Africa.<\/p>\n<p>Australians Seebohm and Groves promised to\u00a0go out on strike if the world swimming body FINA bans any other swimmer for taking part in any rival swimming competition, according to\u00a0<em>The Australian<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The star duo have fully supported the \u201cone-in, all-in\u2019\u2019 approach adopted by 30 international Olympic and world champions at a crisis meeting in London this week, and they say other swimmers will also follow suit, if the world authority FINA continues to threaten two year sanctions against swimmers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"oembed-wrap\">\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-width=\"500\" data-dnt=\"true\">\n<p lang=\"en\" dir=\"ltr\">Extremely productive two days in London with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SwimISL?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@SwimISL<\/a> As athletes we  are incredibly capable to change our sport and how it\u2019s managed. For the first time ever we have an opportunity to have a substantial positive impact and it\u2019s great to see the worlds finest using their voice! <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/TOZJV0I9kP\">pic.twitter.com\/TOZJV0I9kP<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&mdash; Adam Peaty OBE (@adam_peaty) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/adam_peaty\/status\/1075481004247265281?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 19, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/div>\n<hr \/>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\">The furious swimmers <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/isl-london-summit-sees-30-plus-elite-swimmers-gather\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">have gathered in London<\/a> after FINA <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/energy-for-swim-cancelled-according-to-statement-from-adam-peaty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">refused to allow the ISL<\/a>\u00a0from holding a $5 million team-based competition this week in Turin, Italy.<\/p>\n<p>FINA stated that the ISL was unsanctioned and last week launched its own <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/fina-approves-fina-champions-swim-series-competition\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Champions Swim Series<\/a>, a virtual &#8220;copy-cat&#8221; format of what the ISL was trying to accomplish. But that only further damaged its relationship with some of the sport&#8217;s leading athletes. Peaty stated the decision was &#8220;embarrassing and offensive.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peaty was joined in London by Olympic Champions Sjostrom, Le Clos,\u00a0<strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Ryan Murphy<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Gregorio Paltrinieri\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0<strong>Federica Pellegrini<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The two-day conference, held at Stamford Bridge, home of football giant Chelsea FC, was being hosted by the ISL and its founder,<strong>\u00a0Konstantin Grigorishin<\/strong>. The conference\u2019s aim was to both educate swimmers in the structure of professional sports and for ISL to listen to the swimmers\u2019 ideas on necessary changes to ensure an equitable distribution of enormous World and Olympic events revenues, according to a press release from the ISL obtained by\u00a0<em>Swimming World<\/em>.<\/p>\n<p>Grigorishin hopes FINA will acknowledge the ISL&#8217;s vision, and work with, not against, in the future.<\/p>\n<p>During the conference, Grigorishin told swimmers: \u201cWe can co-exist with FINA and respect each other if they understand that their role is that of a regulator of rules not people. And they need to understand that athletes deserve their fair share of all revenues they generate as the stars of swimming.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>One of the biggest concerns of the athletes&#8217; was the fact they receive only a small amount of the revenue generated by FINA. The ISL planned on a three month team-based commercial series set in late 2019, where the swimmers will receive 50 percent of the revenue, which the swimmers agreed to strongly support.<\/p>\n<blockquote>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span style=\"color: #0000ff;\">&#8220;Many swimmers can&#8217;t even pay their rent. For me it&#8217;s OK because I have sponsors but most swimmers work so hard but can barely afford to do it because they don&#8217;t get anything from it and I&#8217;m talking about Olympic swimmers who have to rely on their parents &#8211; it&#8217;s crazy and has to change,&#8221; Sjostrom told\u00a0<em>BBC Sport<\/em>.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Seebohm told\u00a0<i>The Australian<\/i>: \u201cWe hope it doesn\u2019t get to that point, we want to find a solution, rather than having bans.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">Groves said: \u201cWe hope FINA is reasonable and comes to a deal with the ISL because this is about making swimming more exciting and adding to the calendar and the sport, not detracting from it.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"selectionShareable\"><span style=\"color: #008000;\">She then added: \u201cThere is a lot of momentum behind the ISL and it won\u2019t go away, so FINA needs to come around.\u2019\u2019<\/span><\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n<p>The overall goal of the ISL was to provide a series of high profile events that would make swimming more popular to the general public in between Olympic Games.<\/p>\n<p>In explaining ISL\u2019s bottom line, Khan said: \u201cOur goal is to promote swimming, expand its fan base, and to create opportunities for swimmers and the sport as a whole. FINA\u2019s apparent goal, by contrast, is to maintain an iron grip on its unlawful control of the sport at the expense of swimmers and any would-be competitors.
