THE second half of the Australian world championship trials featured some outstanding swims that gave off the impression that the Aussies have shaken off the subpar performances from the 2012 Olympics. From Cate Campbell and James Magnussen pulling off the sprint double to Thomas Fraser-Holmes&#039; Commonwealth record in the 400 IM, the folks Down Under have plenty to be excited for as summer approaches.<\/p>\n<p>But the event that really stood out in Adelaide last week was the men&#039;s 1500 freestyle, in which 17-year-old Jordan Harrison blazed right through the 15-minute barrier for the first time, posting a 14:51.02. The time signaled a 24-second drop from Harrison&#039;s lifetime best and put him third all-time in Australia in the event, which is the most popular race for Australian swimming fans. Grant Hackett and Kieren Perkins are first and second, with Perkins&#039; best swim still 10 seconds faster than Harrison, but maybe not for long.<\/p>\n<p>To add to the accolades, Harrison now sits second in the world in the 2013 rankings behind Sun Yang, which could mean a spot in the championship final at the world championship. After nearly 20 years of dominance in the 1500 free, Australia hit a dry patch after Grant Hackett&#039;s retirement in 2008, but now appears to be back on track. Congratulations to Jordan.
