Cutino award. As is often the case with an honor of this magnitude\u2014selecting the year&#8217;s top male collegiate water polo player\u2014intrigue swirls around who was not nominated as much as who was.<\/p>\n<p>Leading the nominees is <strong>Ben Hallock<\/strong>, named\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/stanfords-hallock-selected-2018-acwpc-player-of-the-year-uscs-vavic-named-2018-coach-of-the-year\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">yesterday<\/a>\u00a0by the Association of Collegiate Water Polo Coaches as its 2018 Player of the Year. Photo Courtesy: Stanford Athletics<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Joining the top Cardinal as a finalist is\u00a0<strong>Johnny Hooper<\/strong>, who plays for Cal, Stanford&#8217;s biggest rival. The dynamic senior attacker scored an impressive 49 goals in just 15 games to finish up his Golden Bear career with 245, good for second all-time in Cal history. Hooper has an NCAA title to his credit\u2014in 2016\u2014and registered 39 thefts this season, making him number one in program history for steals.<\/p>\n<p>A win by Hooper would make it back-to-back Golden Bears; <strong>Luca Cupido<\/strong> was the 2018 Cutino Award winner.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cupido-and-longan-capture-2018-cutino-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>[Cupido and Longan Capture 2018 Cutino Awards at The Olympic Club]<\/em><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Completing the trio is UCLA&#8217;s <strong>Alex Wolf<\/strong>, who has established himself as the country&#8217;s second-best goalie after <strong>McQuin Baron<\/strong>, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/goalies-rule-princetons-johnson-uscs-baron-win-cutino-awards\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2017 Cutino winner<\/a>, and may end up competing with the former Trojan for the top spot on the country&#8217;s best squad\u2014the U.S. men&#8217;s Olympic team.<\/p>\n<p>After backstopping the Bruins to the 2017 NCAA title\u2014and capturing MVP finals honors\u2014Wolf registered 179 saves in 2018 and positioned UCLA for a return to the national title match. Photo Courtesy: Catharyn Hayne<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Two players who did not make the cut, but are sure to be in future discussions about the country&#8217;s best, are Trojans\u00a0<strong>Hannes Daube<\/strong> and <strong>Jacob Mercep<\/strong>. Daube tallied 58 goals in his first year playing for Head Coach <strong>Jovan Vavic<\/strong>, providing a fantastic offensive counterpart to <strong>Marko Vavic<\/strong> (57 goals) and Mercep, who led the team with 62 tallies.<\/p>\n<p>After a freshman year torching Golden Coast Conference opponents\u2014and everyone else\u2014playing for San Jose State, Mercep switched to Southern Cal, and Trojan faithful couldn&#8217;t be happier. Peter J. Cutino, the\u00a0award namesake, is a legend in United States water polo history, with eight NCAA titles during his 26 seasons (1963-1988) as head coach at Cal.<\/p>\n<div class=\"page\" title=\"Page 1\">\n<div class=\"section\">\n<div class=\"layoutArea\">\n<div class=\"column\">\n<p>The winner will be announced at the annual award gala hosted by The Olympic Club in their downtown San Francisco clubhouse on Saturday, June 1.
