VLADIMIR Morozov announced last night that he&#039;s turning pro with one year of eligibility left at the University of Southern California. The Russian surprised many people with his announcement, especially with the Olympics being three years away. Morozov told Swimming World that he&#039;s exploring sponsorship options, but obviously will now have the ability to earn cash prizes at meets such as the FINA World Cup, which starts right after the world championships in August.<\/p>\n<p>While Morozov was fast asleep after making his big announcement, James Magnussen was knocking Morozov off the world number one spot in the men&#039;s 100 free, posting a 47.53 in the final of the Australian nationals. Magnussen has been faster than that, swimming a 47.10 at the Olympic Trials last year, but is now on the road to defending his world championship title from 2011. Behind him were three swimmers under 49 seconds: Cameron McEvoy, who swam a lifetime best 48.07, James Roberts, who was third with a 48.37 and Matt Targett, who was fourth with a 48.58. Australia will also look to defend its world championship title in the 400 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>Cate Campbell also swam fast in the women&#039;s 100 free semifinals with a 52.83, getting within two tenths of Libby Trickett&#039;s national record. It&#039;s a great swim for the 20-year-old, who struggled in the years after the 2008 Olympics but appears to be back on track.<\/p>\n<p>USC, Stanford and UCLA will battle in the women&#039;s NCAA water polo championship next week, with Stanford looking for a third-straight title. The Cardinal has Olympic MVP Maggie Steffens on their roster, which should make for a formidable presence in the pool at Harvard.<\/p>\n<p>Missy Franklin will be a part of a special one-night-only theatrical showing of the official documentary of the 2012 Olympics on May 30 in the United States. Franklin was one of 12 athletes that was followed in the months leading up to their first Olympic Games, where Franklin was one of the highlights, winning four gold and one bronze medal.
