But if they don't there'll be a bigger investigation than Enron.

The Cardinal made short shrift of Coach Mark Schubert's USC Trojans here this afternoon on a gloriously warm and clear afternoon in the City of
Angels, splashing to a 156.5-84.5 win.

The Cardinal, 7-0 overall and 3-0 in Pac-10 competition, have one dual remaining: Bay Area rival Cal (who "softened up" the Trojans yesterday in a
relatively easy win), two weeks from today at Avery Aquatic Center in Palo Alto.

SC, falling to 4-5 overall, 0-4 in the Pac-10s (and when's the last time THAT'S happened?), will next compete at the Pac-10s the second weekend of March at Belmont Plaza.

Coach Skip Kenney's Cardinal got outstanding performances from several swimmers, including sophomore sprinter-flyer Bobby O'Bryan, breaststroker
Michael Bruce and junior sprinter-backstroker Randall Bal.

But sophomores Peter Marshall and Markus Rogan really stole the show, with each swimming the fastest times ever in their respective events in a collegiate dual meet.

Marshall won the 100 back in a blistering (and nation-leading) 46.55 while Rogan, silver medalist in the 200 back at the World Championships last summer, went a blazing pr 3:45.57 to win the 400 IM — slicing nearly three and-a-half seconds off his old pr of 3:48.81 from the Michigan dual meet at Ann Arbor less than a month ago.

The old fastest 100 back dual-meet clocking belongs to Bal, who led off the Card 400 medley relay in 46.77 against Arizona State at Avery two weeks ago.

Rogan's 3:48.8 against the Wolverines was the previous fastest-ever 400 IM in a dual meet.

Prior to this season, Rogan had never seriously swum a 400 IM and now he's a legitimate contender to do battle — and perhaps even win — NCAAs against
Trojans Erik Vendt and Tamas Kerekjarto, Michigan's Tim Siciliano (triple-defending champ), Auburn's Kevin Clements (pr 3:42.90)and Florida's Eric Donnelly (pr 3:45.00), among others.

SC got a stellar performance from junior Vendt, who went a nation-leading and pr 8:49.59 to win the 1000 free; then finished runner-up to Bruce in the 200 breast with a pr 1:59.05. Against Cal yesterday Vendt — silver medalist at the Olymics/World Championships in the 400 IM and NCAA runner-up the last two seasons — swam a pr in the 200 back (1:46.39).

Vendt's 1000 is also fastest-ever in a dual-meet (nobody had been under 8:55 before), and ranks him ninth on the all-time performances list (eighth
performer). That time is also less than two seconds off the Trojan school-record of 8:47.38, done by Mike O'Brien enroute to the NCAA 1650 free title 17 years ago in Austin.

When O'Brien finished his mile at NCAAs that year (1985, his frosh season coming off an Olympic gold 1500 free — training under Schubert at Mission
Viejo), he clocked 14:41.43, still the SC record and then the American-NCAA standard.

Michigan's Chris Thompson has the current collegiate and U.S. marks with his 14:26.62 from last season's NCAAs in College Station.

Other fast swims included Bruce's 54.75-1:56.92 breaststroke wins; Kerekjarto's 3:46.04 400 IM (second); Card frosh Jayme Cramer's seasonal pr in the 200 fly (1:45.97); O'Bryan's 48.12 100 fly win; teammate Jeff Guyman's seasonal pr (44.07) to win the 100 free, SC's Klete Keller's 1:36.10 in the 200 free (No. 2 nationally) and Bal's 20.06 50 free win.

Bruce's times are not far off his prs of 54.39-1:56.59 from last year's Pac-10s, and he'll be after the Card school record of 1:55.02 by Olympian Kurt Grote that won the 1995 NCAA title, later tied by Tom Wilkens. The Stanford and Pac-10 100 breast record is 52.76 by Anthony Robinson from last year's NCAAs — 10th-best
performance, seventh-performer all-time.

The Stanford 100 back record is 45.43 by Brian Retterer from the 1995 NCAA, fourth-fastest all-time. The way Marshall's swimming, that may fall in a couple of weeks against Cal! If not, it's likely a goner at Pac-10s, where he may also take a run at Texas' Neil Walker's American/NCAA record of 44.92 from the '97 Championship in Minneapolis.

Walker swam that time leading off Texas' medley relay inthe prelims. At night he clocked 45.07 and won the 100 back itself in 45.25, history's three-quickest clockings.

Marshall's pr is a 46.08 relay leadoff at NCAAs last season, 12th-fastest performance, fifth performer.

— Bill Bell

MEN'S NCAA DIVISION 1 DUAL MEET
USC VS.
