The FINA World Swimming Championships opened today in Hangzhou, China.<\/p>\n

It is a full week of competition with plenty of big performances possible from many of the world\u2019s top swimmers.<\/p>\n

Mallory Comerford<\/strong> and Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> made the most noise, breaking American records in the first session.<\/p>\n

Here is what is happened in the Day 1 prelims:<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 400 Free<\/h3>\n

Lithuania\u2019s Danas Rapsys<\/strong> got the short-course worlds off to a strong start by taking the top seed in the 400 free. He finished in 3:36.65 to hold off Norway\u2019s Henrik Christiansen<\/strong> (3:38.04).<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s Fernando Scheffer<\/strong> took the third seed in 3:39.10, while Zane Grothe<\/strong> of the U.S. took the fourth seed in 3:39.73.<\/p>\n

Also making the finals were Russia\u2019s Aleksandr Kransnykh<\/strong> (3:39.86) and Martin Malyutin<\/strong> (3:39.85), who tied, followed by Italy\u2019s Gabriele Detti<\/strong> (3:39.89) and Poland\u2019s Wojciech Wojdak<\/strong> (3:40.36).<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Free<\/h3>\n

Mallory Comerford<\/strong> opened her world championships in record fashion. In the 200 free prelims, she went\u00a01:52.52 to break Missy Franklin<\/strong>‘s 1:52.74 from the Duel In the Pool in 2015.<\/p>\n

The short course world record is 1:50.43 by Sarah Sjostrom<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Comerford\u2019s prelims swim sets up an interesting showdown in the final as Australia\u2019s Ariarne Titmus<\/strong> was seconding 1:52.66.<\/p>\n

Russia\u2019s Veronika Andrusenko<\/strong> took the third seed in 1:54.11, followed by Femke Heemskerk<\/strong> of the Netherlands, who finished in 1:54.16.<\/p>\n

Also making the finals are Sweden\u2019s Michelle Coleman<\/strong> (1:54.22), Italy\u2019s Federica Pellegrini<\/strong> (1:54.46), China\u2019s Wang Jianjiahe<\/strong> (1:54.63) and Czech Republic\u2019s Barbora Seemanova<\/strong> (1:54.82).<\/p>\n

Leah Smith<\/strong> finished 15th (1:55.52).<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 200 Fly<\/h3>\n

Japan\u2019s Daiya Sato<\/strong> used a strong start and a stronger finish to take the top seed in the 200 fly. He finished in 1:49.88.<\/p>\n

Sato\u2019s time was well ahead of the rest of the field as China\u2019s Li Zhuhao<\/strong> took the second seed in 1:51.28.<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s Luiz Altamir Melo<\/strong> took the third seed in 1:51.31, followed by Russia\u2019s Aleksandr Kharlanov<\/strong> (1:51.58) and Zach Harting<\/strong> of the U.S., who finished in 1:51.66.<\/p>\n

Also making the final was Bulgaria\u2019s Antani Ivanov<\/strong> (1:51.81), South Africa\u2019s Chad le Clos<\/strong> (1:51.90) and Australia\u2019s Nic Brown<\/strong> (1:52.15).<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s 50 Breast<\/h3>\n

Another Lithuania swimmer snagged a top seed on opening day as Ruta Meilutyte<\/strong> took the top spot in the 50 breast in 29.56.<\/p>\n

U.S. swimmer Katie Meili<\/strong> took the second seed in 29.94, ahead of Italy\u2019s Martina Carraro<\/strong> set the national record and Jamaica\u2019s Alia Atkinson<\/strong>, who tied for third by each swimming 30 seconds flat.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 100 Back<\/h3>\n

Brazil\u2019s Guilherme Guido<\/strong> took the top seed in the 100 back, holding off some of the biggest names in recent backstroke history, who will all be looming in the semifinals. He lowered his South American record in the event.<\/p>\n

Ryan Murphy<\/strong> of the U.S. took the second seed in 49.72, ahead of China\u2019s Xu Jiayu<\/strong> (49.83), Matt Grevers<\/strong> of the U.S. (50.12), Romania\u2019s Robert Glinta<\/strong> (50.33) and Australia\u2019s Mitch Larkin<\/strong> (50.27).<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s 400 IM<\/h3>\n

Katinka Hosszu<\/strong> continued her dominance in the 400 IM. The Hungarian Olympic champion has not lost many races in the event the past few years. She took a dominating four-second lead over the field heading into finals.<\/p>\n

Hosszu finished in 4:23.59.<\/p>\n

France\u2019s Fantine LeSaffre<\/strong> (4:27.74) and Lara Grangeon<\/strong> (4:27.91) followed Hosszu. Italy\u2019s Ilaria Cusinato<\/strong> took the fourth seed (4:28.02) ahead of Melanie Margalis<\/strong> (4:29.14) of the U.S.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 100 Breast<\/h3>\n

Ilya Shymanovich<\/strong> of Belarus took the top seed in the 100 breast, finishing in 56.47.<\/p>\n

Italy\u2019s Fabio Scozzoli<\/strong> took the second seed in 56.94, followed by Andrew Wilson<\/strong> of the U.S. (57.01), China\u2019s Wang Lizhuo<\/strong> (57.03) and Brazil\u2019s Felipe Lima<\/strong> (57.14).<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s 100 back<\/h3>\n

Olivia Smoliga<\/strong> broke the American record in the 100 back by nearly a half second, cruising to the top seed in 55.47.<\/p>\n

Kathleen Baker<\/strong> held the previous mark in 55.91 that she set in September during the World Cup stop in the Netherlands.<\/p>\n

Smoliga finished well ahead of a strong field. Australia\u2019s Emily Seebohm<\/strong> took the second seed in 57.08, followed by Hungary\u2019s Katinka<\/strong> Hosszu<\/strong> (57.09), Czech Republic\u2019s Simona Kubova<\/strong> (57.13), Baker (57.16) and Australia\u2019s Minna Atherton<\/strong> (57.17).<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 200 IM<\/h3>\n

China\u2019s Wang Shun<\/strong> had a strong performance in front of the home crowd to close out the individual first-day prelims, taking the top seed in the 200 IM (1:53.18).<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s Caio Pumputis<\/strong> took the second seed in 1:53.33, finishing ahead of Josh Prenot<\/strong> of the U.S., who clocked a 1:53.44.<\/p>\n

Japan\u2019s Hiromasa Fujimori<\/strong> took the fourth seed in 1:53.48, followed by Brazil\u2019s Leonardo Coelho Santo<\/strong> (1:53.53), Poland\u2019s Jan<\/strong> Switkowski<\/strong> (1:53.60), who set a national record, Russia\u2019s Kliment Kolesnikov<\/strong> (1:53.63) and Australia\u2019s Mitch Larkin <\/strong>(1:53.69).<\/p>\n

Women\u2019s 4×100 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

Lia Neal, Veronica Burchill, Erika Brown<\/strong> and Kelsi Dahlia<\/strong> got the U.S. relays off to a strong start at worlds, taking the top seed in the 4×100 free relay in 3:29.52.<\/p>\n

The Netherlands team of Kim Busch, Maaike deWaard, Valerie van Roon<\/strong> and Ranomi Kromowidjojo<\/strong> took the second seed in 3:32.67.<\/p>\n

Russia was third in 3:33.33 and China was fourth in 3:33.42.<\/p>\n

Men\u2019s 4×100 Free Relay<\/h3>\n

Russia\u2019s Evgeny Rylov, Ivan Kuzmenko, Mikhail Vekovishchev<\/strong> and Ivan Girev<\/strong> took the top seed in the men\u2019s relay, finishing in 3:05.16.<\/p>\n

Brazil\u2019s Matheus Santana, Marcelo Chierghini, Breno Correia<\/strong> and Cesar Cielo<\/strong> took the second seed in 3:05.70.<\/p>\n

The U.S. team of Ryan Held, Kyle DeCoursey, Michael Jensen<\/strong> and Matt Grevers<\/strong> took the third spot in 3:05.72.<\/p>\n
