{"id":341608,"date":"2018-12-10T10:20:52","date_gmt":"2018-12-10T17:20:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=341608"},"modified":"2019-04-11T11:15:47","modified_gmt":"2019-04-11T18:15:47","slug":"isl-ceo-ali-khan-too-late-for-out-of-touch-fina","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/isl-ceo-ali-khan-too-late-for-out-of-touch-fina\/","title":{"rendered":"ISL CEO Ali Khan: &#8220;Too Late&#8221; For &#8220;Out of Touch&#8221; FINA"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swimmers from around the world have spoken out against the world&#8217;s governing body of the sport, FINA, especially in recent weeks.<\/p>\n<p>But a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/tom-shields-michael-andrew-katinka-hosszu-sue-fina-for-antitrust-violations\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">lawsuit filed by<\/a><strong> Tom Shields, Michael Andrew<\/strong> and <strong>Katinka Hosszu<\/strong>, along with the International Swimming League (ISL) has elevated the issue to more than talk.<\/p>\n<p>More and more swimmers, including <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-fina-has-swimming-stuck-in-1970s\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Adam Peaty<\/a>, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cate-campbell-blasts-fina-for-forgetting-they-exist-because-of-athletes\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Cate Campbell<\/a><\/strong> and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/chad-le-clos-throws-support-behind-international-swimming-league-on-eve-of-world-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\"><strong>Chad le Clos<\/strong><\/a> have continued to speak out and support the ISL, even after the premier event of the league, the Energy for Swim, was cancelled this month.<\/p>\n<p>It is for this reason that ISL is continuing its push forward after filing a lawsuit separate from the athletes against FINA, for violating U.S. antitrust laws.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I believe FINA is out of touch with respect to what is happening in global sports,&#8221; ISL CEO <strong>Ali Khan<\/strong> told <em>insidethegames<\/em>. &#8220;Whatever they now do will be too little too late for the athletes. Hence why the swimmers are reacting in this manner.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Several prominent swimmers, including prominent U.S. swimmers, had committed to the Energy for Swim meet, showing the support is growing.<\/p>\n<p>But it was cancelled after FINA threatened to suspend athletes who participated in a non-sanctioned event.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We ruled that the event was an international competition, which it very obviously was. The calendar for international competitions does need to be carefully thought out,&#8221; FINA President<strong> Julio Maglione<\/strong> told <em>insidethegames<\/em>. &#8220;FINA is ready to consider proposals for commercial partnerships but always in compliance with our rules.
