{"id":340935,"date":"2018-12-05T11:42:46","date_gmt":"2018-12-05T18:42:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=340935"},"modified":"2018-12-05T12:53:05","modified_gmt":"2018-12-05T19:53:05","slug":"adam-peaty-fina-has-swimming-stuck-in-1970s","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/adam-peaty-fina-has-swimming-stuck-in-1970s\/","title":{"rendered":"Adam Peaty: &#8216;Whole Sport Needs to Change&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The same week that <strong>Cate Campbell<\/strong> vocalized her opinion of the direction FINA is headed, British world record holder <strong>Adam Peaty<\/strong> followed suit.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It feels like we&#8217;re still in 1970,&#8221; Peaty told BBC Sport. \u201c(FINA) need(s) to listen to the athletes and hear what they want instead of saying: &#8216;You need it this way.&#8217; The whole sport needs to change and that&#8217;s something I&#8217;m very passionate about.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Peaty was an outspoken supporter of the upstart International Swimming League (ISL), which was set to have its debut race in December. But that meet was cancelled as swimmers were threatened by FINA that competing in an unsanctioned event could lead to a suspension.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/the-swim-off-between-fina-and-the-international-swimming-league\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ISL<\/a> was seen as an alternative to swimmers who didn\u2019t want to participate in the FINA World Cup Series.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The current format isn&#8217;t working because no-one is watching and 90 percent of the world&#8217;s best athletes don&#8217;t turn up because there&#8217;s no prestige,&#8221; he told BBC Sport. \u201c(The ISL) is where the sport needs to go and I think FINA should be behind it.
