Unappreciated, undaunted, underfunded and unmatched, Soichi Sakamoto turned international swimming on its ear. In the late 1930s and early 1940s, he resurrected Hawaiian swimming, producing world-class swimmers whose first pool was a Hawaiian sugarcane irrigation ditch that was eight feet wide by four feet deep!<\/p>\n

A musically-inclined science teacher at Pu’unene School on Maui, Sakamoto was an abysmal aquanaut himself, but a determined, often obsessed man who was driven by dreams for others more than himself.<\/p>\n

Throughout his storied career, the intrepid teacher coached and mentored a number of Olympic and national champions. His Olympians included Bill Smith<\/strong>, Thelma Kalama<\/strong>, Evelyn Kawamoto<\/strong>, Bumpy Jones<\/strong>, Richard Cleveland<\/strong>, Ford Konno<\/strong>, Yoshi Oyakawa<\/strong>, Bill Woolsey<\/strong>, Fujiko Katsutani<\/strong>, Sonny Tanabe<\/strong> and George Onekea<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
