Specifically, body size and shape (Part I), body rotation (Part II) and head position and motion (Part III) were each presented as essential elements to control for optimizing swimming technique. All of these factors help to minimize resistance, but also help to make a stable “base of support” to maximize propulsion.<\/p>\n
The “base of support” is a commonly used term for land-based activities such as running. The ground provides a solid and stable environmental BOS for generating propulsive actions by the foot. In swimming, water does not provide a similarly stable environmental B0S for the hand. In addition, rotational motions of the torso often compromise the body B0S and decrease the ability to generate propulsion. Future articles will address how optimal technique controls stability of both the environmental BOS and the body BOS for greater propulsion.<\/p>\n
Dr. Rod Havriluk is a sports scientist and specializes in swimming technique instruction and analysis.
