Both teams put up a significant margin of victory over the next best Division III competition, Emory. The Eagles were notably without distance sensation\u00a0<strong>Tom Gordon.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Denison junior\u00a0<strong>KT Kustritz\u00a0<\/strong>beat Eastern Michigan&#8217;s Division I breaststroking All-American\u00a0<strong>Delaney Duncan\u00a0<\/strong>as the two went head to head in the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Kustritz came up just .07 shy of her own NCAA Division III record in the 100 breast, finishing in 59.84. She posted a 2:13.72 in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>Emory freshman\u00a0<strong>Clio Hancock\u00a0<\/strong>put together a 4:17.06 400 IM. That time would have won a National Title at last year&#8217;s meet. Another Emory freshman,\u00a0<strong>Gaige Elms,\u00a0<\/strong>put together a noteworthy 200 back, touching in 2:00.06.<\/p>\n<p>Her senior teammate\u00a0<strong>Fiona Muir\u00a0<\/strong>led the way in her individual event lineup, dipping under 23 in the 50 free with a 22.98, winning the 200 freestyle in 1:48.51, less than a second off her 2018 NCAA finals time, and touching first in the 100 free in 49.50.<\/p>\n<p>A trio of Division III women cleared five minutes in the 500 free: Emory&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Maria Turcanu\u00a0<\/strong>(4:56.16) and Denison&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Hannah Ruskino\u00a0<\/strong>(4:56.75) and\u00a0<strong>Caroline Colville\u00a0<\/strong>(4:58.98). Ruskino had the leading DIII mile of the meet in 17:09.75.<\/p>\n<p>Big Red senior\u00a0<strong>Matt Hedman\u00a0<\/strong>continued to excel, winning the 500 free in 4:26.83, just off his time from NCAA last year. Sophomore teammate\u00a0<strong>Drake Horton\u00a0<\/strong>wasn&#8217;t far back, touching in 4:28.96, just ahead of junior teammate\u00a0<strong>James Baker\u00a0<\/strong>in 4:29.16. Hedman blasted a 15:18.98 in the 1650 on Saturday night.<\/p>\n<p>Horton won the 200 free in 1:38.87 while teammate\u00a0<strong>Matt McHugh\u00a0<\/strong>finished runner up (1:38.99).<\/p>\n<p>Denison junior\u00a0<strong>Bebe Wang\u00a0<\/strong>was also just off his NCAA times from last year, winning the 200 IM in 1:47.85. WashU&#8217;s senior\u00a0<strong>Kevin Van Cleave\u00a0<\/strong>was also impressive, finishing in 1:48.80. Wang won the 200 backstroke in 1:45.47. As he was at NCAAs, WashU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Peyton Wilson\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind, this time in 1:46.77.<\/p>\n<p>Emory&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Trey Kolleck\u00a0<\/strong>neared his best, touching second in the 50 free in 20.19. He won the 100 free in 44.09, .02 faster than he went at NCAA finals last year.<\/p>\n<p>Emory had dominant freshmen in both genders in the 400 IM.\u00a0<strong>Zach Lorson\u00a0<\/strong>clocked a 3:51.86, a time that would have been third in 2018. Another freshman,\u00a0<strong>Jason Hamilton\u00a0<\/strong>went a 1:59.59 to win the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>Defending NCAA Champion\u00a0<strong>Sage Ono\u00a0<\/strong>of Emory was the top DIII swimmer in the 100 back with a 48.92, over a second off his time from last March.<\/p>\n<p>In the final individual event of the weekend, Denison junior\u00a0<strong>Mitch Williams\u00a0<\/strong>beat his 200 fly NCAA finals time from last year, touching in 1:46.65. After beating Williams by a few hundredths last March, WashU&#8217;s\u00a0<strong>Brandon Lum\u00a0<\/strong>was a second back this weekend, touching second in 1:47.61.<\/p>\n<h3><a href=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/results\/pdf\/2018-denison-invite-ncaa-college-2018-11-29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Full results.\u00a0<\/a><\/h3>\n<p>A full recap of this weekend&#8217;s Division III action will be available Monday.<\/p>\n<h3>Press Releases:<\/h3>\n<h3>Women:<\/h3>\n<p>GRANVILLE, Ohio&#8211;\u00a0 The Big Red women&#8217;s swimming &amp; diving team entered the 2018 Denison Invitational as the top-ranked team in Division III and after three days of stellar performances that national ranking was verified.\u00a0 The Big Red won the Invitational with 2,479 team points.\u00a0 Division I Eastern Michigan placed second with 2,046 and Emory University checked in third with 1,704 points.\u00a0 Division II Wayne State placed fourth (1,263) followed by Washington-St. Louis (1,043), Ohio State (113) and Thomas More (51).<\/p>\n<p>One pool record fell on Saturday night as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/kustritz_kt_6140\">KT Kustritz<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0posted a rock solid &#8216;B&#8217; cut time of 2:13.72 to win the 200 breaststroke.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/mesaros_kate_jrxu\">Kate Mesaros<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0finished fifth after a season-best &#8216;B&#8217; cut of 2:17.91 in preliminaries.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/zaravella_natalie_811v\">Natalie Zaravella<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0made her cut in prelims at 2:21.09 and out of the B-Final,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/lantry_olivia_ld3r\">Olivia Lantry<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0notched a cut after a time of 2:21.70.<\/p>\n<p>In the 1,650 freestyle,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/rusinko_hannah_47w4\">Hannah Rusinko<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0paced Denison with a fourth-place finish and a time of 17:09.75.\u00a0 Zaravella touched fifth in 17:16.04 while\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/colville_caroline_r6cb\">Caroline Colville<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0placed sixth (17:20.65) and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/kacmarek_grace_tdt1\">Grace Kacmarek<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0finished eighth in 17:30.61.\u00a0 All four times were &#8216;B&#8217; cuts.\u00a0 Finishing just outside the provisional qualifying standard was first-year\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/balbo_megan_r4os\">Megan Balbo<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0who touched ninth with a time of 17:35.03.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/whelan_zoe_0llz\">Zoe Whelan<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0led a crew of seven Denison swimmers who posted top-16 finishes in the 200 butterfly.\u00a0 Whelan placed fifth after posting a 2:03.30 &#8216;B&#8217; cut in prelims. She returned with a time of 2:05.23 in the finals.\u00a0 Colville placed seventh in 2:08.31 and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/taylor_becca_4fyr\">Becca Taylor<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0finished ninth in 2:14.35.<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 freestyle,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/chiappe_mia_c8cl\">Mia Chiappe<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0placed fourth with a &#8216;B&#8217; cut time of 51.41.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/hopkins_maddie_toip\">Maddie Hopkins<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0touched in 51.75 in prelims for her &#8216;B&#8217; cut.\u00a0 She returned to finish seventh in the finals with a time of 51.84.<\/p>\n<p><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/hsu_erica_092s\">Erica Hsu<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0turned in a &#8216;B&#8217; cut in the 200 backstroke after a fifth-place finish and time of 2:03.13.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/horton_bridget_4x0l\">Bridget Horton<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(2:05.36),\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/lenz_sydney_qog4\">Sydney Lenz<\/a><\/strong>(2:07.13) and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/javens_devin_dik0\">Devin Javens<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(2:08.02) rounded out the event in 13<sup>th<\/sup>, 16<sup>th<\/sup>, and 18<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0place, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Four Big Red divers competed on the 3-meter board led by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/fitzgerald_allison_ii0b\">Allison Fitzgerald<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0who placed eighth with a six-dive score of 236.20.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/weber_emma_bqo1\">Emma Weber<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0followed in ninth place with a score of 232.50.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/clayton_naomi_e6r6\">Naomi Clayton<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0finished 11<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at 213.05 and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/stauss_mattie_87nd\">Mattie Stauss<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0checked in 12<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0at 190.00.<\/p>\n<p>The meet was wrapped up by a third-place performance in the 400 free relay by Chiappe, Hopkins,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/gaguzis_sophia_bq0r\">Sophia Gaguzis<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/wswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/kustritz_kt_6140\"><strong>KT Kustritz<\/strong><\/a>.\u00a0 The foursome combined for a time of 3:26.81 which is a season-best &#8216;B&#8217; cut for the Big Red.<\/p>\n<p>Zaravella led Denison with 113 points across the three-day meet. In five events, Zaravella placed second in the 200 IM (2:03.79), third in the 400 IM (4:21.74), fifth in the 1,650 free (17:16.04), ninth in the 200 breast (2:23.37) and was a part of the third-place 800 free relay. Kustritz totaled 105 points and Colville followed with 103.<\/p>\n<p>In lieu of admission to the Denison Invitational donations and non-perishable\u00a0food items were collected at the gate. Over three days nearly $2,000 was collected along with 478 food items.\u00a0 Donations will be made to the Market Street Pantry and the Licking County Food Pantry.<\/p>\n<h3>Men:<\/h3>\n<p>GRANVILLE, Ohio&#8211;\u00a0 Top-ranked Denison men&#8217;s swimming and diving walked away from the 2018 Denison Invitational with the team championship. The Big Red totaled 2,936 points to win the event by 1,064 points over second-place, Emory University.\u00a0 Third place went to Washington University-St. Louis with 1,530 points.\u00a0 Fourth-place belonged to Division II Wayne State at 1,403 points and Thomas More placed fifth with 193 points.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Red racked up 19 more NCAA &#8216;B&#8217; cut times on Saturday to go along with four event titles.\u00a0 Denison&#8217;s distance free depth was on full display in the 1,650 free as\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/hedman_matt_3ygd\">Matt Hedman<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0broke his own pool record with a time of 15.18.98.\u00a0 First-year\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/gately_lukas_0z6v\"><strong>Lukas Gately<\/strong><\/a>\u00a0placed third and he did it out of the B-Final as he won the heat with a &#8216;B&#8217; cut time of 15:38.64.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/baker_james_2ont\">James Baker<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0checked in fourth at 15:44.13.\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/wilson_dayen_vwnm\">Dayen Wilson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(15:53.77) and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/berman_jackson_shel\">Jackson Berman<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0(16:10.16) placed eighth and 10<sup>th<\/sup>, respectively.\u00a0 Baker, Wilson, and Berman all posted provisional qualifying times.<\/p>\n<p>Another pool record fell in the 200 butterfly as five-time All-American and last year&#8217;s third-place finisher in the 200 fly\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/williams_mitch_6yqr\">Mitch Williams<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0won the event with a personal best time of 1:46.65.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/houskeeper_noah_0c3v\">Noah Houskeeper<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0followed in fourth at 1:49.87.\u00a0 He posted a career-best &#8216;B&#8217; cut time of 1:49.17 in prelims.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/reed_matt_78on\">Matt Reed<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/senior_kymani_6hja\">Kymani Senior<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0finished in fifth and ninth place respectively.\u00a0 Both logged &#8216;B&#8217; cuts in prelims as Reed touched in 1:50.14 and Senior posted 1:50.66.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 NCAA Division III national champion in the 200 backstroke,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/wang_bebe_taca\">Bebe Wang<\/a><\/strong>, set a new pool record with a winning time of 1:45.47.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/stauffer_john_u92f\">John Stauffer<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0improved his &#8216;B&#8217; cut time by 0.48 seconds after touching sixth in 1:49.17.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/froemming_nick_9tf9\">Nick Froemming<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0posted a 1:49.18 &#8216;B&#8217; cut in prelims and finished seventh in the finals.\u00a0 In the B-Final, Samuel Jo placed 10<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0(1:49.81) and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/sigloh_chas_f0dw\">Chas Sigloh<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0was 13<sup>th<\/sup>\u00a0(1:51.65).<\/p>\n<p>In the 100 freestyle, Denison placed 10 swimmers in the top-18 led by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/horton_drake_64xq\">Drake Horton<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong>\u00a0third-place finish in 44.88.\u00a0 In prelims,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/mchugh_matt_435g\">Matt McHugh<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0and Senior both posted &#8216;B&#8217; cut times of 45.00. They went on to place sixth and ninth in the finals, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Three more provisional qualifying times were logged in the 200 breaststroke, led by\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/kurlich_richie_awa2\">Richie Kurlich<\/a>&#8216;s<\/strong>\u00a0time of 2:00.44 that landed him in second place.\u00a0 Tiernan Foster Smith was fifth in 2:02.67 and\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/stevenson_ryan_kpxw\">Ryan Stevenson<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0place ninth in 2:04.04.<\/p>\n<p>On the 3-meter dive,\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/simmons_liam_6ffn\">Liam Simmons<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0placed second with a six-dive score of 216.65.\u00a0\u00a0<strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.denisonbigred.com\/sports\/mswimdive\/2018-19\/bios\/downey_brendan_x9bb\">Brendan Downey<\/a><\/strong>\u00a0placed fourth with a score of 169.10.<\/p>\n<p>The Big Red capped off the three-day invitational with a resounding victory in the 400 free relay as McHugh, Wang, Horton, and Gerlach touched in 2:57.52.<\/p>\n<p>Denison was led in scoring by Senior who finished with 103.5 points over the course of the three-day meet.<\/p>\n<p>In lieu of admission to the Denison Invitational donations and non-perishable\u00a0food items were collected at the gate.
