GREENSBORO, North Carolina, April 6. THE final evening of action at the YMCA Short Course Nationals featured three more YMCA records falling by the wayside. <\/p>\n
York's Meghan Small kept on keeping on as she clipped another YMCA standard tonight following her part in three last night. She won the women's 200-yard IM in a time of 1:58.85. That swim edged the previous mark of 1:58.90 set by Susanna White of Lynchburg in 2011. Small's teammate Niki Price put up a 2:01.29 to finish second, while Sarasota's Sophie Cattermole earned third in 2:02.50. <\/p>\n
Sarasota's Danielle Valley closed out her dominance of the distance freestyle events this week with a YMCA record in the women's 1650-yard free. Valley raced to a time of 16:04.69, clearing the previous record of 16:04.96 set by WSY's Leah Gingrich way back in 2007. That record was on notice heading into the meet anyway as Valley had a lifetime best 16:01.64 just last November. York's 13-year-old Courtney Harnish placed second in 16:13.98, while Schroeder's Cassy Jernberg claimed third in 16:21.76. <\/p>\n
York put another YMCA relay record notch in its belt as Harnish (50.60), Price (50.19), Victoria Griffin (50.11) and Small (48.88) turned in a 3:19.78 in the women's 400-yard free relay. That swim chopped more than two seconds off the previous mark of 3:22.15 set by Middle Tyger in 2011. Sarasota (3;23.25) and Middle Tyger (3:23.53) took second and third in the finale.<\/p>\n
Triangle Area's Colin Ellington came up half-a-second short of Woody Joye's YMCA record of 1:47.09 from 2009 in the men's 200-yard IM. Ellington clocked a 1:47.45, while Red Bank's Sam Lynch turned a sixth seed into second place with a 1:48.57. Huntington's Nate Carr picked up third-place honors in 1:48.74. <\/p>\n
Sunbury's Adriana Grabski replicated her top-seeded prelim swim of 49.75 with the same time to win the finale in the women's 100-yard free as one of Margo Geer's YMCA record of 48.89 remained untouched after Katrina Konopka took down her 50-yard free earlier in the meet. Middle Tyger's Konopka wound up third tonight in 49.90, while Lakeland Hills' Ingrid Shu touched second in 49.88.<\/p>\n
Springfield's Ryan Held swept the sprint frees at YMCAs with a 43.91 to win the 100-yard free. On night one, he became the first man under 20 seconds at the YMCA meet with a 19.92 for the splash-and-dash win. Somerset Valley's Brad Zdroik touched well behind with a 45.21 for second, while Ellington snared his second podium of the night with a third-place 45.31. <\/p>\n
Greater Flint's Courtney Weaver raced to victory in the women's 200-yard fly with a 1:57.24. That swim fell less than a second off Hali Flickinger's 2012 YMCA mark of 1:56.52. Waynesboro's Remedy Rule moved from a fifth seed into second with a 1:58.86, cutting more than two seconds off her prelim swim of 2:01.10. Sarasota's Taylor Katz finished third in 1:58.93. <\/p>\n
Brandywine's Ben Creekmore prevailed in the men's 200-yard fly with a time of 1:47.95, while prelim top seed Sava Turcanu of Hickory finished second in 1:48.20. Middle Tyger's Justin Mehl earned third with a time of 1:48.82. <\/p>\n
Brandon Flynn closed out the final individual event of the meet with a 15:25.64 to win the men's 1650-yard freestyle. Matt O'Donnell finished second in 15:29.80, while Carter Page took home third in a time of 15:33.69. <\/p>\n
Triangle Area's Bailey Maloney, Ben Mayes, Noah Franz and Colin Ellington topped the men's 400-yard free relay with a time of 3:02.29. Ocean County finished second in 3:03.15, while Somerset Valley took third in 3:03.31. <\/p>\n
In the team title race, Sarasota finished with 847 combined points, while Middle Tyger (624), York (612), Wilton (555) and Somerset Valley (518) finished second through fifth.
