During the Friday night finals session at the 2018 U.S. Winter Nationals,\u00a0Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>took the win in the women’s 200 free, while other notable victors included\u00a0Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>in the women’s 100 back and backstroker\u00a0Jacob Pebley<\/strong> in an unusual event for him, the 200 free. Meanwhile,\u00a0Madisyn Cox\u00a0<\/strong>and\u00a0Christopher Reid\u00a0<\/strong>each won their second titles of the meet.<\/p>\n

Women’s 400 IM<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Madisyn Cox<\/strong>, competing this weekend at Nationals for the first time since a six-month substance-related suspension and clearing her name of any wrongdoing, won her second title of the weekend in the 400 IM. Cox trailed early in the race but ended up pulling away to win in 4:38.52. That clipped her previous lifetime-best time of 4:38.85 that she had set back in 2016.<\/p>\n

Cox now ranks as the fifth-fastest American this year. She won the race by almost three seconds as Sarasota Y’s\u00a0Emma Wyant\u00a0<\/strong>touched out\u00a0Athens Bulldogs’\u00a0Hali Flickinger\u00a0<\/strong>for second, 4:41.20 to 4:41.24. Flickinger\u00a0opened up a big lead after her butterfly and backstroke legs, but she quickly faded on the breaststroke as Cox took over.<\/p>\n

NC State’s\u00a0Makayla Sargent\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 4:45.79, followed by HPC-Victoria’s\u00a0Emily Overholt\u00a0<\/strong>(4:45.93). Also in the final were\u00a0Meg Bailey\u00a0<\/strong>(4:48.00), Sandpipers’\u00a0Reese Hazan\u00a0<\/strong>(4:50.72) and Greenwich WYCA’s\u00a0Meghan Lynch<\/strong> (4:52.38).<\/p>\n

\"women-400-im\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 400 IM<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Jay Litherland<\/strong> has been as quick as 4:10.21 in the 400 IM this year, a time bettered by only his Georgia training partner\u00a0Chase Kalisz<\/strong> and Japan’s\u00a0Daiya Seto<\/strong>. He was not nearly that quick in winning the event at Winter Nationals, as he swam a time of 4:20.16. But Litherland never had any serious competition and was not pushed down the stretch.<\/p>\n

In a field packed with teenagers, Long Island’s\u00a0Jason Louser\u00a0<\/strong>finished second in 4:23.99, and\u00a0Tristan Cote\u00a0<\/strong>claimed third in 4:24.61. Fourth went to Phoenix Swim Club’s Zachary Tan\u00a0<\/strong>in 4:25.28.<\/p>\n

Nation’s Capital’s\u00a0Sean Conway\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 4:28.49, ahead of\u00a0Matt Fallon\u00a0<\/strong>(4:30.06),\u00a0Paige Dacosta\u00a0<\/strong>(4:30.80) and\u00a0Nick Vance\u00a0<\/strong>(4:31.05).<\/p>\n

\"men-400-im\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Fly<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Amanda Kendall<\/strong>, a 27-year-old now training at Indiana, put up a lifetime best to take the win in the 100 fly at Winter Nationals. Her time of 57.80 bumped her up to No. 4 in the country this year behind\u00a0Kelsi Dahlia<\/strong>,\u00a0Katie McLaughlin<\/strong> and\u00a0Kendyl Stewart<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Teenager\u00a0Olivia Bray<\/strong>\u00a0of the Virginia Gators put together a very impressive 58.55 to take second, making her the ninth-fastest American this year and the fastest under the age of 18.\u00a0Torri Huske\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 59.27.<\/p>\n

Dana Vollmer<\/strong>, the 2012 Olympic gold medalist and the second-fastest swimmer all-time in the event, took fourth in 59.38. Vollmer has competed sparingly since the 2016 Olympics. She gave birth to her second son in 2017 and has not competed at a Nationals since 2016.<\/p>\n

Canadian\u00a0Rebecca Smith\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 59.42, followed by TAC’s\u00a0Claire Curzan<\/strong> (59.82), Athens Bulldogs’\u00a0Megan Kingsley\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.40) and\u00a0Leah Gingrich\u00a0<\/strong>(1:00.78).<\/p>\n

\"women-100-fly\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Fly<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Phoenix Swim Club’s\u00a0Giles Smith<\/strong>, always strong over the first part of his races, blasted out to a 24.27 first 50 split in the 100 fly final, and he held on to take the title even as he faded down the stretch. Smith came in at 52.94, four tenths slower than his 52.54 prelims time.<\/p>\n

Grand Canyon’s\u00a0Daniil Antipov\u00a0<\/strong>finished fast and ended up taking second in 53.38, and Imperial Valley’s\u00a0Kevin Mendoza\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 53.64.<\/p>\n

Yoessek Tibazi<\/strong> finished fourth in 54.09, just ahead of Canadian\u00a0Josiah Binnema\u00a0<\/strong>(54.14),\u00a0Noah Bowers\u00a0<\/strong>(54.20),\u00a0Brendan Burns\u00a0<\/strong>(54.25) and\u00a0Noah Henderson\u00a0<\/strong>(54.80).<\/p>\n

\"men-100-fly\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 200 Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Katie Ledecky\u00a0<\/strong>was her usual dominant self in the women’s 200 free final in Greensboro, leading by a half-second early and pulling away. Always fast year-round, Ledecky swam a time of 1:55.32, less than a second off her 2018 best time of 1:54.56 from June. The title was Ledecky’s third of the meet after previously winning the 800 free and 400 free.<\/p>\n

Simone Manuel<\/strong> was the only other swimmer to even break 1:58, touching in 1:57.92 for second. Athens Bulldogs’\u00a0Hali Flickinger\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 1:59.34, beating out Canadian\u00a0Rebecca Smith\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.71) and Club Wolverine’s\u00a0Gabby Deloof\u00a0<\/strong>(1:59.93) on the last 50. Deloof will join Ledecky and Manuel as part of the U.S. 4×200 free relay at the 2019 World Championships.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Kennedy Goss\u00a0<\/strong>(2:00.60), Boilermaker’s\u00a0Kaersten Meitz\u00a0<\/strong>(2:01.11) and Nashville’s\u00a0Meaghan Raab\u00a0<\/strong>(2:02.61) were the other A-finalists.<\/p>\n

\"women-200-free\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 200 Free<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Jacob Pebley<\/strong>, last year’s World Champs bronze medalist in the 200 back, gave the 200 free a shot at Winter Nationals, and he ended up pulling out a victory with a lifetime-best time of 1:49.33. Pebley led wire-to-wire and held off a quick last 50 from Gator’s\u00a0Mitch D’Arrigo<\/strong>, who settled for second in 1:49.63.<\/p>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Carson Olafson\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 1:49.84, while New Jersey teenager\u00a0Dare Rose<\/strong>, representing Scarlet, put up an impressive time of 1:50.45 to take fourth.<\/p>\n

Dynamo’s\u00a0Kevin Litherland\u00a0<\/strong>took fifth in 1:51.08, while brother\u00a0Jay\u00a0<\/strong>took seventh in 1:52.12 after winning the 400 IM earlier in the night.\u00a0Jonathan Rutter\u00a0<\/strong>took sixth (1:51.26), and\u00a0Destin Lasco\u00a0<\/strong>was eighth (1:52.81).<\/p>\n

\"men-200-free\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Breast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Micah Sumrall\u00a0<\/strong>finished strong over the final 25 meters to take a Winter Nationals win in the 100 breast. Considered better at the 200-meter distance, Sumrall has been as quick as 1:06.34 this season, good for eighth in the year, and this time she finished in 1:07.51.<\/p>\n

NC State’s\u00a0Sophie Hansson<\/strong> took second in 1:08.14, and Canada’s\u00a0Kelsey Wog\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 1:08.58.\u00a0Emily Escobedo\u00a0<\/strong>took fourth in 1:09.00.<\/p>\n

Marlins of Raleigh’s\u00a0Abby Arens\u00a0<\/strong>finished fifth in 1:09.21, and Longhorn’s\u00a0Madisyn Cox<\/strong>, fresh off a 400 IM victory, was sixth in 1:09.51. Also in the final were Cardinal Community’s\u00a0Emily Weiss\u00a0<\/strong>(1:10.56) and Gamecock’s\u00a0Rachel Bernhardt\u00a0<\/strong>(1:10.66).<\/p>\n

\"women-100-breast\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Breast<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Athens Bulldogs’\u00a0Nic Fink<\/strong> touched out Phoenix Swim Club’s\u00a0Kevin Cordes\u00a0<\/strong>by four hundredths to top the National final of the 100 breast. Fink, who was sixth at the 50-meter mark, came in at 1:00.18, while Cordes touched in 1:00.22. Cordes swam two tenths faster in prelims, when he nearly broke 1:00 with his mark of 1:00.04.<\/p>\n

Aggie’s\u00a0Jonathan Tybur\u00a0<\/strong>came in third at 1:00.11, while\u00a0Chuck Katis<\/strong>, who was second at the halfway mark, faded to fourth in 1:01.28.<\/p>\n

The rest of the finalists included\u00a0Ben Cono\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.59),\u00a0Eli Wall\u00a0<\/strong>(1:01.59),\u00a0Alex Evdokimov\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.06) and\u00a0Zane Backes\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.24).<\/p>\n

\"men-100-br\"<\/p>\n

Women’s 100 Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Canada’s\u00a0Kylie Masse\u00a0<\/strong>made an appearance at U.S. Winter Nationals in Greensboro and was the class of the field in her signature event, the 100 back. The World Champion and former world record-holder touched in 59.27, less than a second off her season best of 58.29.<\/p>\n

Nation’s Capital’s\u00a0Phoebe Bacon\u00a0<\/strong>almost got under 1:00 as she chased Masse down the stretch. Bacon, who was fourth at this summer’s Nationals at 59.12, finished this time in 1:00.02.\u00a0Ali DeLoof\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 1:00.53.<\/p>\n

Kentucky’s\u00a0Bridgette Alexander<\/strong> took fourth in 1:01.51, and then there was a big gap back to the rest of the field. That included\u00a0Caroline Bentz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.07), Nebraska’s\u00a0Autumn Haebig\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.18), Kentucky’s\u00a0Ali Galyer\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.27) and Drexel’s\u00a0Alexa Kutch\u00a0<\/strong>(1:02.76).<\/p>\n

\"women-100-back\"<\/p>\n

Men’s 100 Back<\/strong><\/h3>\n

Christopher Reid<\/strong>, a South African Olympian and member of the Alabama Crimson Tide, used a strong burst over the final 15 meters to hold off\u00a0Jacob Pebley\u00a0<\/strong>to win the 100 back national title. Reid finished in 53.95, just ahead of Pebley in 53.99. Pebley was going for his second win of the evening after earlier winning the 200 free.<\/p>\n

In a tight finish among four swimmers, HPC-Victoria’s\u00a0Markus Thormeyer\u00a0<\/strong>took third in 54.09, and Grand Canyon’s\u00a0Mark Nikolaev\u00a0<\/strong>was just behind in 54.12.\u00a0Luke Kaliszak<\/strong>, Reid’s teammate at Alabama, finished fifth in 54.87.<\/p>\n

Rounding out the top eight were\u00a0Kane Follows\u00a0<\/strong>(55.68), Gator’s\u00a0Corey Main\u00a0<\/strong>(55.97) and UNCW’s\u00a0Will Countie\u00a0<\/strong>(56.16).<\/p>\n
