IT&#039;S a no-brainer who we picked for the Speedo Performance of the Week, especially if you saw the final of the 200 breaststroke at the men&#039;s NCAA Division I swimming and diving championships. Kevin Cordes was without peer in the race, posting an amazing 1:48.68. The Arizona sophomore is the first person to swim 200 yards of breaststroke under 1:50, a barrier that many in the sport still cannot believe has been shattered by more than a second. It&#039;s even more amazing when you understand that that the time puts Cordes almost three seconds ahead of the next-fastest person in history, who happens to be training partner Clark Burckle.<\/p>\n<p>As for the swim itself, Cordes&#039; focus on stroke count is what continues to have people talking. After taking just three strokes in the first 25 yards, Cordes settled into four strokes for each of the next four lengths. His stroke count was five for the sixth and seventh 25s, then six strokes for the final 25 yards for a total of 35 strokes.<\/p>\n<p>Cordes has put himself in a completely different league in the yards version of the 100 and 200 breaststrokes, and swimming fans are anxious to see what the Arizona sophomore can do in the long course versions of the events this summer. But for now, let&#039;s congratulate Kevin Cordes on his phenomenal 200 breaststroke, which earned him the Speedo Performance of the Week.<\/p>\n<p><i>Editor&#039;s note: The video segment incorrectly names Cordes as a junior at the University of Arizona.
