The Texas Invite got off to a quick start last night in Austin with the Longhorns winning the 800 free relay to kickstart the meet on Wednesday night. Texas freshman\u00a0Drew Kibler\u00a0<\/strong>swam a lightning quick 1:32.20 on the lead-off leg, which is the fastest time in the nation.<\/p>\n

Kibler also nearly broke the 17-18 NAG Record in the event, which is a 1:32.18 by\u00a0Maxime Rooney\u00a0<\/strong>from the 2017 SEC’s. Kibler improved on his best time of 1:32.66 from the 2018 American Short Course Championships. He stood second in the all-time rankings for the 17-18 age group, and is now just 0.02 seconds out of first.<\/p>\n

Kibler will have another chance this weekend to get under the 200 free NAG record as he is the second seed in the event behind Longhorn teammate in senior\u00a0Townley Haas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

    Drew Kibler’s time is the fastest in the nation, moving ahead of Florida’s\u00a0Khader Baqlah\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.91) and Indiana’s\u00a0Mohamed Samy\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.97).<\/p>\n

    Kibler led the way for the rest of the Longhorns to post the top time in the nation, moving ahead of Florida (6:15.04) and Indiana (6:17.78). Those two schools swam their 800 free relays at the end of the second day of their respective invites, as opposed to Texas, who is using the NCAA schedule and swimming the 800 on the first night.<\/p>\n

    Jeff Newkirk\u00a0<\/strong>(1:33.15),\u00a0Austin Katz\u00a0<\/strong>(1:35.60) and Haas (1:33.34) put up the top time in the nation in that event. Stanford’s\u00a0Jack LeVant\u00a0<\/strong>(1:32.61) also dropped a huge best time as he broke Stanford’s school record in the 200 free. LeVant’s previous best was a 1:33.57 from earlier this year. LeVant is currently in his freshman year at Stanford. LeVant turned 19 on October 3, so his time does not factor into the 17-18 NAG all-time rankings.<\/p>\n

    Kibler and LeVant, both freshmen, now have the top two times in the country in the 200 free.<\/p>\n
