The Golden Goggles, the major awards show for USA Swimming, happened this week in the heart of New York City, with the best swimmers coming together to honor the best swimmers and races of the past year. Check out the storylines from that event and the other biggest stories of week from the week that was! <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #5 – 2018 US National Psych Sheet Released<\/b><\/h3>\n

The official psych sheet for the 2018 US Winter Nationals meet in Greensboro, North Carolina was released last week, with some of the best swimmers from around the country gathering to compete starting November 28. The meet will be held in long course meters and is one of the first opportunities for swimmers to qualify for the 2020 U.S. Olympic Trials. While many of the swimmers from the short course world championships meet won\u2019t be in attendance, there will still be plenty of star-power including <\/span>Katie Ledecky<\/b>, <\/span>Simone Manuel<\/b>, <\/span>Nathan Adrian<\/b>, and the return of <\/span>Dana Vollmer<\/b>. The Week That Was #4 – USA Swimming Selects 2019 Swim Squads<\/b><\/h3>\n

The USA Swim Squads are set to return for a second season with the 2019 TYR Pro Swim Series and will feature four new captains: <\/span>Maya DiRado<\/b>, <\/span>Elizabeth Beisel<\/b>, <\/span>Connor Jaeger<\/b>, and <\/span>Cammile Adams<\/b>. Prior to the start of the 2018 Golden Goggles festivities, <\/span>Rowdy Gaines<\/b> hosted a live fantasy draft where the four captains took turns choosing swimmers for each of their squads. This fantasy draft featured a total of five live rounds, while the remainder of the squads were chosen off camera. The Week That Was #3 – Chad le Clos Named South African Sportsman of the Year<\/b><\/h3>\n

The South African Sports Awards named Olympic gold medalist <\/span>Chad le Clos <\/b>the <\/span>South African Sportsman of the Year<\/span><\/a>. This year, le Clos won three gold medals at the 2018 Commonwealth Games by sweeping the butterfly events. He also won the silver medal in the 100 freestyle and was on the South Africa 400 medley relay that earned the bronze. It was the second time le Clos has won the award, with the other coming in 2014. Fellow swimmer <\/span>Tatjan Schoenmaker <\/b>was named the Newcomer of the Year after winning the 100 and 200 breaststrokes at the 2018 Commonwealth Games. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #2 – Leah Hayes Names Sports Kid of the Year<\/b><\/h3>\n

13-year-old Leah Hayes has been <\/span>named the 2018 Sports Kid of the Year<\/span><\/a>, appearing in this month\u2019s issue of Sports Illustrated Kids. Hayes, who was selected as a <\/span>Swimming World Up & Comer<\/span><\/a> back in 2016, currently owns six National Age Group records including two from this year. Beyond her talent in the pool, Hayes was selected as Sportskid of the Year for her ability to win races with \u201cgrace\u201d and \u201cpositivity.\u201d The young swimmer is known for her sportsmanship and ability to lift others up. The young swimmer has dealt with the disease alopecia from the age of six, which she admitted was a drain on her confidence before fully confronting her hair loss at just 8-years-old and explaining her disease to her entire fourth grade class. The Week That Was #1 – Ledecky, Murphy Win Athlete of the Year Awards<\/b><\/h3>\n

The best of the United States swimmers gathered in the heart of New York City this week for the 2018 Golden Goggle Awards. <\/span>Swimming World<\/span><\/i> was on-site gathering interviews and photographs from the evening while providing a recap of the award show. <\/span>Katie Ledecky <\/b>earned her sixth straight Female Athlete of the Year award, while <\/span>Ryan Murphy <\/b>won the male equivalent of the award. Murphy also took home Male Race of the Year for his 100 backstroke win at the 2018 Pan Pacific Championships. Other winners included <\/span>Michael Andrew <\/b>for the Breakout Performer of the Year Award, and <\/span>Micah Sumrali <\/b>for the Perseverance Award.
