The 2018 FINA World Cup came to a close this week in Singapore, with <\/span>Vlad Morozov <\/b>and <\/span>Sarah Sjostrom <\/b>ending as the title winners for the 2018 series. Catch up with the updates from that meet and the other biggest stories from the week that was!<\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #5 – Duncan Scott Wins British Swimmer Of The Year<\/b><\/h3>\n

In a surprise twist, British swimmer <\/a><\/span>Duncan Scott <\/b>won British Swimming\u2019s Athlete of the Year Award. Scott won the award over world record holder <\/span>Adam Peaty <\/b>and the fastest 50 freestyler in textile, <\/span>Ben Proud<\/b>. Scott won six medals at the Commonwealth Games, including four individual medals that included a gold in the 100 free, before going on to win four medals at the subsequent European Championships. That meet included a stunning victory from lane eight in the 200 free<\/a>, which was also the fastest time posted this summer (1:45.34). Scott did express his surprise at the award on social media, especially given Peaty\u2019s world record and Proud\u2019s fastest in textile 50 free from this summer. <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #4 – Sean Hutchison Permanently Banned By Safe Sport<\/b><\/h3>\n

The U.S. Center for Safe Sport <\/span>finalized the permanent ban of former coach <\/span>Sean Hutchison<\/b><\/a> from Olympic sports this week. <\/span>Ariana Kukor\u2019s <\/b>attorney, <\/span>Robert Allard<\/b>, confirmed they received an email that his ban was finalized this week. Hutchison did not attempt to appeal the ban. Hutchison was accused of sexual assault of former Olympic swimmer Kukors, who made the <\/span>accusations public earlier this year<\/span><\/a>. In May, Kukors <\/span>filed a lawsuit against Hutchison<\/span><\/a>, USA Swimming and then-USA coach Mark Schubert, claiming that Hutchison sexually assaulted her and that USA Swimming and Schubert didn\u2019t do enough. Schubert said that <\/span>he reported what he heard<\/span><\/a> about the inappropriate relationship rumors between Kukors and Hutchison, <\/span>who has denied the allegations<\/span><\/a> and said anything that happened in their relationship was consensual.<\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #3 – 2018 Energy For Swim Cancelled<\/b><\/h3>\n

Late this week the swimming world learned that the much-discussed <\/span>Energy for Swim meet was cancelled<\/span><\/a>. The Energy for Swim has been a <\/span>subject of controversy over the past months<\/span><\/a>, as more swimmers continued to commit to competing despite FINA\u2019s threats of possible suspension. Olympian <\/span>Adam Peaty<\/b> released a statement on the cancellation, saying he was \u201cincredibly disappointed\u201d to see the meet cancelled due to \u201cpolitics.\u201d Peaty was one of the first swimmer\u2019s to commit to the Energy for Swim, which is taking place immediately following the FINA Short Course Championships in December. Since then, <\/span>a long list of swimmers<\/span><\/a> from around the globe committed to the Energy for Swim, despite FINA\u2019s threats to suspend any participants for up to two years if they competed in Turin. <\/span>FINA themselves released a statement on the cancellation of the meet<\/span><\/a>, again stating that the meet in Turin did not \u201cmeet all the necessary FINA rulebook requirements.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n

The Week That Was #2 – Lilly King Scares American Record In 100 Breast<\/b><\/h3>\n

Some of the top college teams across the country began their mid-season invitationals this weekend, with plenty of the best NCAA swimmers hitting the pool after their first significant rest of the season. <\/span>Lilly King <\/b>was a standout this weekend, narrowly missing her own NCAA and <\/span>American record in the 100 breast<\/span><\/a>. King recorded a 56.43 at the Indiana Invitational in her home pool, just off her 56.25 from NCAA\u2019s last year. King also had the <\/span>sixth fastest 200 breast ever at the Indiana Invitational<\/span><\/a> (2:03.60). The Week That Was #1 – Morozov, Sjostrom Claim 2018 FINA World Cup Titles<\/b><\/h3>\n

The 2018 FINA World Cup came to a close this week, with <\/span>Vlad Morozov <\/b>and <\/span>Sarah Sjostrom <\/b>ending the circuit as the overall winners<\/span><\/a>. Both will leave with $150,000 each for winning the overall series title. Morozov finished the World Cup in Singapore on a high note, becoming the second man ever under 45 seconds in the short course 100 free, breaking the world cup record in the process. Morozov also broke his own world record in the 100 IM twice during the series, <\/span>breaking it in September<\/span><\/a> before <\/span>tying it earlier this month<\/span><\/a>. Sjostrom was incredibly consistent across the world cup stops, ending with four more wins in Singapore in the 50\/100 free, 50 fly, and 100 IM. You can see the full li<\/span><\/p>\n
