BATON ROUGE, La., Feb. 2. THE Florida State women's swimming and diving team, ranked No. 21 nationally by the College Swim Coaches Association of America, broke the school record for victories in a season with 13, by defeating Louisiana State, 138-105, Rice University, 149-86 and Louisiana-Monroe, 206-32, Saturday in Baton Rouge, La. The Lady Seminoles' 13 wins eclipse the previous record of 11 victories, which came in 1981. <\/p>\n
The Lady Seminoles were able to defeat all three opponents due to their depth, despite only winning four of the meet's 12 events. This marks the second meet in a row which FSU's depth in the individual events has propelled them to victory. In last week's upset win over then-ranked No. 21 Alabama, the Lady Seminoles won six of 16 events, but finished second, third and fourth in the majority of the meet's races to take the 164-136 victory.<\/p>\n
Emma Dutton earned two victories for the Lady Seminoles, one in the 200-yard individual medley and another as part of the 400-medley relay team. Dutton's win in the 200 IM came in at 2:06.10 and she, along with Emily Breen, Candice Nethercott and Christy Cech, won the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:48.31.<\/p>\n
FSU's divers had an impressive meet as they went up against LSU, which won last season's diving national championship. Tiffany Manning won the three-meter with a scored of 315.05. On the one-meter, Manning turned in a second-place performance, scoring 262.75 points<\/p>\n
Laura Kenney picked up the Lady Seminoles' only other win in the 200 backstroke. Kenney touched the wall a whole second ahead of her competition at 2:06.01. <\/p>\n
Important team points were turned in by Angie Leach in the 1,650-yard free (third place, 17:12.67), Loren Hansen in the 200 free (second, 1:52.57), Cech in the 50 free (second, 23.44) and 100 free (third, 51.35), Lisa How in the 200 IM (third, 2:08.29) and 200 butterfly (third, 2:05.80), Amber Goodwin in the 200 back (third, 2:09.01) and Keryn Krynauw in the 200 breaststroke (second, 2:19.49).<\/p>\n
Today's meet was to be a huge test for the Lady Seminoles, as they defeated two previously ranked teams in LSU, head coach Neil Harper's Alma matter, and Rice. The last time the women were ranked in the top 25, FSU lost consecutive road meets to Clemson and Florida. <\/p>\n
The Lady Seminoles will return to action on Saturday, February 9, when they host South Carolina at 11 a.m. at the Bobby E. Leach Aquatic Center on the FSU campus. Saturday's dual meet against the Game Cocks will be the featured athletic event during FSU's National Girls & Women Sports Day.<\/p>\n
The Rice Owls defeated Louisiana-Monroe 138-70 despite coming up short against No. 21 Florida State (149-86) and LSU (151-83).<\/p>\n
Rice junior Mandy Mularz won the 50-yard freestyle and added a second-place finish in the 100 free. Freshman Lauren Hill joined Mularz with a first-place showing in the 200 breaststroke and a second in the 200
\nindividual medley.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Elaine Lee won the 200 butterfly in 2:03.92, the Owls' fastest time of the season in that event.
\nFreshman Corrie Kristick and sophomore Jackie Corcoran finished second and third, respectively, in the 500 free. It was Corcoran's fourth consecutive top-three finish in the event and Kristick's third straight.<\/p>\n
Rice (3-5-1) closed out the dual meet season with Saturday's meet and will next compete at the WAC Championships beginning Feb. 28 in San Antonio.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
