IOWA CITY, Iowa \u2014 The University of Iowa swimming and diving team completed day one of the Hawkeye Invitational on Thursday at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center. Both the men\u2019s and women\u2019s teams boasted season bests, but junior Hannah Burvill<\/strong>‘s performance headlined the action with a new school record.<\/p>\n

Burvill swam lights out from start to finish starting with a school record in the morning prelims in the 50 free. She posted a qualifying time of 22.62, breaking Emma Sougstad\u2019s record of 22.63. She then upped the ante, breaking her own mark during her lead leg of the 200-free relay, finishing with a time of 22.55.<\/p>\n

Burvill also swam a personal best in the 500 free during prelims 4:44.24, which places her at No. 5 in the country in the event. She also led off the fourth-place 400-medley relay (3:41.01). The 50 free, 500 free, and 200 free relay all earned NCAA \u2018B\u2019 qualifying times.<\/p>\n

Freshman Mateusz Arndt<\/strong> swam another season best in the 500 free, posting a 4:23.31.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

DIVING WELL DOMINANCE<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sophomore Jayah Mathews<\/strong> continued her hot streak with a 1-meter springboard victory with a score of 315.75. Sophomore Anton Hoherz<\/strong> took third on the 3-meter springboard with a score of 352.60.<\/p>\n

SPRINTS STAY HOT<\/strong><\/p>\n

Juniors Joe Myhre<\/strong> (19.86) and Will Scott<\/strong> (19.88) both posted season-bests in the 50 free in the \u2018A\u2019 final. Both men also helped the second-place 200-free relay to a time of 1:18.90. This moves the relay from No. 10 in the U.S. to No. 3.<\/p>\n

HEARING FROM JUNIOR HANNAH BURVILL<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cTo be able to put up the times we\u2019re doing already this season is a big confidence boost for us all. I didn\u2019t see the school record coming to be honest. I\u2019ve moved from more distance related training to sprint training with the hope of getting more speed and endurance, which has been working for me. It\u2019s a big confidence boost to be consistent with my times in prelims and in finals, which is nice going into tomorrow. We need to continue the energy we got today and transition it into our events tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n

HEARING FROM HEAD COACH MARC LONG<\/strong><\/p>\n

\u201cAcross the board we\u2019re happy with what we\u2019re seeing right now. Diving did great and swimming has been going well, but we still have a lot of things to go over. So far so good. This is a meet which is part of our whole plan to prepare for February and March, and we\u2019re rising to the occasion. There are a lot more events coming tomorrow, so we\u2019re making sure our swimmers are taking care of themselves tonight and recovering. Hannah did great in the free and then again steps up in the backstroke and the 500, we\u2019re proud of how she did today.\u201d<\/p>\n
