After a\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/gostanford.com\/news\/2018\/11\/10\/mens-water-polo-triumphant-splash.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">12-11 OT win<\/a> over arch-rival Cal in last week&#8217;s annual Big Splash match-up, the Cardinal will draw\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/uclabruins.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UCLA<\/a> (20-3; 1-2 MPSF) in a Saturday semifinal. This is a dangerous pairing for Stanford; the Bruins tagged the Cardinal with a 10-8 loss two weeks ago in LA. The <a href=\"https:\/\/calbears.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Golden Bears<\/a> (16-5; 1-2 MPSF) will meet the host <a href=\"https:\/\/usctrojans.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Trojans<\/a> (29-1; 2-1 MPSF) in the other semifinal; last week #1 USC <a href=\"https:\/\/usctrojans.com\/news\/2018\/11\/10\/mens-water-polo-dasic-delivers-the-late-winner-as-no-1-usc-beats-no-2-ucla-12-11.aspx\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">extended<\/a> an 11-match win streak at the Bruins&#8217; expense.<\/p>\n<p><strong>[<a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cant-beat-a-trojan-twice-usc-tops-stanford-for-2018-mpsf-invite-mens-water-polo-title\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><em>Stanford beats USC in 1st MPSF match of 2018<\/em><\/a>]<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Cal has the most to lose this weekend; as the nation\u2019s 4th-ranked team, they likely need to find a path to the MPSF title game to be in consideration for one of the NCAA at-large berths. UCLA is the other team looking up in the MPSF hierarchy but #2 ranked UCLA\u00a0can rely on junior<strong> Alex Wolf<\/strong>, the most experienced goalie in the conference.<\/p>\n<p>The MPSF fifth-sixth place game is noteworthy, as newcomer <a href=\"http:\/\/www.acroos.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/2018-19\/schedule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Austin College<\/a> (1-12) will almost certainly face <a href=\"http:\/\/www.psblions.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Penn State Behrend<\/a> (3-17) twice over the weekend. The Kangaroos and the Nittany Lions may be the MPSF\u2019s ugly ducklings but they are fortunate to face each other one of the country\u2019s best polo venues. Pepperdine was slated to host this year\u2019s championship but, as a result of the unimaginable carnage in the area around Malibu, the tournament has been relocated to Long Beach State. Not only does this negatively impact the Waves&#8217; chances of capturing their second GCC title in three years, the fires prevented Terry Schroeder\u2019s team from playing its final regular season match against #5\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ucsbgauchos.com\/sports\/m-wpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">UC Santa Barbara<\/a> (18-8; 3-1 GCC). Both the Gauchos and the Waves finished behind #9\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.pacifictigers.com\/sports\/m-wpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pacific<\/a> (11-11; 4-1 GCC) but only #7\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/pepperdinewaves.com\/index.aspx?path=mwpolo\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Pepperdine<\/a> (15-10; 3-1 GCC) may get a crack at the Tigers for the top spot. Equally impressive, since 2016 the Sagehens have gone 35-1 in conference play. They\u2019ll host <a href=\"http:\/\/www.clusports.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Cal Lutheran<\/a> (16-11; 8-6 SCIAC) on Friday in one semifinal; the Poets of <a href=\"http:\/\/www.wcpoets.com\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Whittier<\/a> (15-13; 10-4 SCIAC) will entertain <a href=\"https:\/\/www.cmsathletics.org\/sports\/mwaterpolo\/index\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Claremont-Mudd-Scripps<\/a> (15-10; 10-4 SCIAC) in Friday\u2019s other semifinal.
