THE University of California Golden Bears head into defense of their men&#039;s NCAA Division I swimming and diving team title with 16 swimmers, one less than title contender Michigan, according to the official psych sheet released today.<\/p>\n<p>Cal&#039;s squad includes defending champions Will Hamilton (200 fly), Tom Shields (100 fly and 100 back) and Marcin Tarcynski (200 IM). Shayne Fleming and Seth Stubblefield, two of the members of the winning 200 free relay at last year&#039;s championships, also return to the Big Dance.<\/p>\n<p>Michigan&#039;s arsenal includes Olympian Connor Jaeger in the 500 and 1650 freestyles, as well as a host of returning All-Americans. The Wolverines last won a national championship in 1995, and their highest team place since then was third in 1996, though the team has been in the top 10 consistently since 2001.<\/p>\n<p>Other teams in the double-digit numbers include Arizona (13), Florida (14), Georgia (11), Indiana (10), Southern California (10), Stanford (14) and Texas. A total of 235 swimmers were selected from 51 teams.<\/p>\n<p>Depending on how many divers each school qualifies, each school will be able to send up to four relay alternates.
