DALLAS, Texas, Feb. 1. THE 19th-ranked Texas A&M men's swimming and diving team won a barnburner of a meet over the Southern Methodist Mustangs 122-119 at Perkins Natatorium late Friday evening.<\/p>\n
The A&M relays, which have been strong all season long, proved to be the difference in this heated battle between two closely ranked programs. The Aggies opened the meet with a seasonal best in the 400-yard medley relay, winning in a time of 3:17.18. <\/p>\n
More importantly, with the meet in the balance, the foursome of Dan Blanchard, Patrick Kennedy, Robbie Taylor and Matt Rose won the 400 freestyle relay in an NCAA provisional qualifying time of 2:59.44. The win in the final relay coupled with A&M taking third as well in the race ensured the Aggies of going home on top.<\/p>\n
Six different A&M swimmers won individual events on Friday. Matt Rose led the way once again with his brilliance in the short sprints. The All-American sophomore won both the 50 and 100 freestyle races while teammate Riley Janes came in right behind him in each race.<\/p>\n
Senior Jesse Even, fresh off being accepted to medical school this week, captured first in the one-meter diving competition with a score of 312.60.<\/p>\n
Sophomore Scott Hansen, who had spent some time in the doctor's office himself, returned strong to win the 200 fly in 1:48.46.<\/p>\n
All-American senior Patrick Kennedy claimed first in the 200 freestyle with a very low NCAA provisional time of 1:37.77 while freshman Alfredo Jacobo took a chunk of time off his season best in swimming a provisional qualifier of 2:01.15 in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n
The Aggies will take three weeks off to train for the Big 12 Championships to be held Feb. 20-23 at the Sudent Rec Center Natatorium in College Station.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
