Swimming Technique Concepts: International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming<\/h2>\n
The XIIIth International Symposium on Biomechanics and Medicine in Swimming (BMS) was held in Japan, Sept. 17-21, at the University of Tsukuba. There were presentations by delegates from 23 countries on a wide range of topics\u2014from learning skills for drowning prevention to technique and training strategies for optimizing performance. In addition to seven invited lectures and 167 oral\/poster presentations, there were vendor exhibits and poolside technology demonstrations.<\/p>\n
As the host delegation, Japan fully supported the conference and was responsible for many presentations. There were also presenters from Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, China, Costa Rica, the Czech Republic, Egypt, France, Germany, Greece, Norway, Poland, Portugal, Russia, Scotland, Serbia, Singapore, Spain, Thailand, the UK and the USA. Sadly, only two USA organizations contributed their research: Indiana University and Swimming Technology Research.<\/p>\n
A wide variety of topics were addressed. There were studies on aquatic exercise, water polo, synchronized swimming, starts, turns, kicking, diving, instrumentation and athlete injuries.<\/p>\n
