Jordan Wilimovsky: Twice the Man<\/h2>\n

Not many swimmers are able to do what Jordan Wilimovsky<\/strong> does\u2014and that\u2019s swim both the 1500 meter freestyle in the pool and the 10K Marathon race in open water…and be successful at both. In fact, in 2016 he became the first American ever to qualify in both pool and open water events at the same Olympics.<\/p>\n

And it was in open water where Wilimovsky achieved his first breakthrough, finishing fourth in the 10K at U.S. Nationals in 2013. Later that year, he represented the United States in the grueling 25-kilometer race at the World Championships in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

And yes, Wilimovsky really considers swimming for hours without stopping in a body of water with no black line in sight \u201cmixing it up.\u201d After his first few attempts at the 10K, he explained, the race just didn\u2019t feel that long. By contrast, open water offers something a little different for every race, both in terms of setting and strategy.<\/p>\n

Whereas in a pool race, such as the 1500, swimmers go in with their strategy and aim to stay in their own lane\u2014in other words, not changing their race plan based on how someone else in the race has decided to swim. For open water swimmers, where drafting off others is the norm, it works differently.<\/p>\n
