The 2018 Iowa Girls Swimming & Diving State Championships took place on Nov. 3 at the Marshalltown YMCA. Ames High School earned their fourth-straight team title with 372 points.<\/p>\n

Dowling Catholic junior\u00a0Berit Quass\u00a0<\/strong>set new Iowa State marks in the 100 fly and 500 free and was a member of the record-setting 4×50 medley relay.<\/p>\n

Dowling Catholic’s\u00a0Katie Broderick, Mary Martin, <\/strong>Quass and\u00a0Mary Sweetman\u00a0<\/strong>started the meet with a bang, setting a new Iowa State record in the 4×50 medley relay with a time of 1:42.00. Ames took second in 1:44.31 and third place went to Iowa City in 1:46.52.<\/p>\n

Dowling Catholic’s\u00a0Clare Culver\u00a0<\/strong>won a close 200 free battle, getting her hand to the wall first in 1:48.68 to defend her title. Ames’\u00a0Amy Feddersen\u00a0<\/strong>was also under the 1:50 mark, taking a close second in 1:48.82 as Iowa City West’s\u00a0Aurora Roghair\u00a0<\/strong>finished third in 1:50.13.<\/p>\n

Martin gave Dowling Catholic their third win of the dat in the 200 IM, using a strong back half to take the 200 IM victory in 2:02.96. Bettendorf’s\u00a0Arianna Ottavia\u00a0<\/strong>was second in 2:03.16 and Iowa City West’s\u00a0Scarlet Martin\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 2:03.33.<\/p>\n

Ankeny’s\u00a0Jasmine Rumley\u00a0<\/strong>took the top spot in the 50 free for the second-consecutive year, splashing and dashing her way home in 22.64 as the only swimmer under the 23-second barrier. Second place went to Broderick in 23.55 and Anna Pfeiffer\u00a0<\/strong>swam a time of 23.89 for third place.<\/p>\n

Quass came out on top of a very close 100 fly race, stopping the clock in 54.16 for the State honors only hundredths ahead of Martin’s 54.61. WDM Valley’s\u00a0Reilly Shaner\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 56.23. Quass’ 53.67 during prelims broke her own Iowa State record she set last year.<\/p>\n

Quass continued her winning ways in the 500 free, posting a time of 4:50.96 during finals for the victory to successfully defend her title. Roghair was second in 4:53.20 and Ames’\u00a0Brinley Horras\u00a0<\/strong>was third in 4:554.82.\u00a0Quass also set a new State record during prelims with a quick 4:48.88.<\/p>\n

Fedderson earned the gold in the 100 free as the first of a pair of swimmers to break 50 seconds, taking the race in 49.75. 50 free champ Rumely grabbed the silver in a close 49.77 and the bronze went to Ankeny’s\u00a0Erin Doruska\u00a0<\/strong>in 50.91.<\/p>\n

Ames’ Feddersen,\u00a0Meghan Donald, Molly Winer\u00a0<\/strong>and Horras combined to win the 4×50 free relay in State record-setting fashion of 1:33.50. Bettendorf posted a time of 1:35.42 for second and Ankeny’s relay squad finished in 1:35.77 for third.<\/p>\n

Not too long after, Winer claimed the individual crown in the 100 breast after touching the wall in 1:02.17. M. Martin was about three-tenths back in 1:02.42 for second as Iowa City’s\u00a0Olivia Masterson\u00a0<\/strong>swam a 1:03.26 for third.<\/p>\n

Broderick led the way in an extremely close 100 back race, getting her hand to the wall the quickest in 55.77. Cedar Falls’\u00a0Grace Frericks\u00a0<\/strong>was right behind in 55.87 as the runner-up followed closely by third-place finisher\u00a0Annie Galvin\u00a0<\/strong>(55.92) of Ames.<\/p>\n

Ames’\u00a0Jayna Mirsa\u00a0<\/strong>dove to the top spot in the 1-meter diving for the second-straight season, posting a final score of 555.35 for the win. CR Washington’s\u00a0Ayla Taylor\u00a0<\/strong>(476.75) and Ames’\u00a0Jocelyn Buss\u00a0<\/strong>(454.95) finished second and third, respectively.\u00a0\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n

Ames secured their championship team title as Galvin, Horras,\u00a0Gracie Wesselmann\u00a0<\/strong>and Feddersen concluded the meet with a 4×100 free relay victory in 3:25.55. Dowling Catholic was second in 3:26.04 and Iowa City West took third in 3:30.13.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
