﻿{"id":336130,"date":"2018-11-03T21:40:31","date_gmt":"2018-11-04T04:40:31","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=336130"},"modified":"2018-11-03T21:40:31","modified_gmt":"2018-11-04T04:40:31","slug":"big-ten-recap-michigan-tops-iowa-osu-msu-win","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-ten-recap-michigan-tops-iowa-osu-msu-win\/","title":{"rendered":"Big Ten Recap: Michigan Tops Iowa; OSU, MSU Win"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The No. 6-ranked University of Michigan men&#8217;s swimming and diving team continued its winning ways, dispatching Iowa (232-121) and Denver (271-80) to conclude a two-day double dual on Saturday (Nov. 3) at the Campus Recreation and Wellness Center.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I think we had some best times and some best in-season times on both sides,&#8221; said head coach <strong>Mike<\/strong> <strong>Bottom<\/strong>. &#8220;Our diving was real consistent, probably the most consistent we&#8217;ve been in a long time. As a team, even with some absences, we&#8217;re showing that we&#8217;re well-rounded, and have enough depth to fill in holes when needed.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The distance training group had another great showing, going 1-2-3-4 in the 500-yard freestyle. Sophomore <strong>Ricardo Vargas<\/strong>, who posted the nation&#8217;s top time in the 1,000-yard freestyle last night, won again (4:23.11), followed by freshman <strong>Patrick Callan<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Will Roberts<\/strong>, as all three men finished within three seconds of each other. Sophomore <strong>Dylan Boyd<\/strong> was fourth.<\/p>\n<p>Two others were repeat winners. Junior <strong>Miles Smachlo<\/strong> won the 100-yard butterfly by a 1.5-second margin (47.89), while senior <strong>Kai Williams<\/strong> took the 200-yard backstroke by nearly two seconds (1:46.84).<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Tommy Cope,<\/strong> junior <strong>Jacob Montague<\/strong> and freshman <strong>AJ Bornstein<\/strong> combined for a 1-2-3 finish in the 200-yard breaststroke, with Cope touching first at 2:00.14. Junior <strong>Charlie Swanson<\/strong> took his specialty event, leading a 1-2-3 finish in the 400-yard individual medley (3:53.40) along with Roberts and junior <strong>Felix Aub\u00f6ck<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>In the women&#8217;s meet, freshman <strong>Maggie MacNeil<\/strong> set a pool record in the 100-yard butterfly and was one of seven different individual-event winners in leading the No. 3-ranked University of Michigan women&#8217;s swimming and diving team to a sweep of Iowa (255-97) and Denver (276-77) on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>Two weeks after setting the school record in a training suit, MacNeil came close to surpassing that mark on Saturday, winning the 100-yard butterfly in 51.57 and establishing a new pool record. Senior <strong>Siobh\u00e1n Haughey<\/strong>, who set her own pool record in the 200-yard freestyle yesterday, came within a tenth of a second of having another, taking the 100-yard freestyle in 48.35.<\/p>\n<p>The Wolverines were dominant in the distance events, going 1-2-3-4 in the 500-yard freestyle behind sophomore <strong>Sierra Schmidt<\/strong> (4:53.41). Senior <strong>Catie DeLoof<\/strong>, one of the team&#8217;s sprinters, went up in distance and took second behind Schmidt (4:54.02), while seniors<strong> Becca Postoll<\/strong> and <strong>Katie Duggan<\/strong> were third and fourth, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Miranda Tucker<\/strong> won the 200-yard breaststroke (2:14.13), combining for a 1-2-3 finish with senior <strong>Yirong Bi<\/strong> and sophomore <strong>Alex Hughes<\/strong>, while junior <strong>Chloe Hicks<\/strong>, a transfer from Virginia Tech, notched her first win in the maize and blue in the 200-yard backstroke (2:00.20). Bi came back two races later to win the 400-yard individual medley (4:19.76), just ahead of teammate <strong>Kate<\/strong> <strong>Krolikowski<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>The Wolverines also captured both relays in dominating fashion. The 400-yard medley relay team of senior <strong>Taylor Garcia<\/strong>, Tucker, MacNeil and Haughey won by more than six seconds (3:38.13), while the foursome of MacNeil, Haughey, Garcia and DeLoof won the 200-yard freestyle relay by more than three seconds (1:30.88)<\/p>\n<p>Iowa&#8217;s sprint group showed its depth with a first-place finish from junior <strong>Joe Myhre<\/strong> (44.23) in the 100 free. Senior <strong>Jack Smith<\/strong> took fourth with a time of 44.97.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Michael Tenney<\/strong> swam a season-best in the 100 fly in a time of 49.42. He also was third in the 400 IM in a time of 3:56.62.<\/p>\n<h3>Ohio State wins twice<\/h3>\n<p>The No 10. men and No. 15 women\u2019s Ohio State swimming &amp; diving team made a statement on Friday evening at McCorkle Aquatic Pavilion, defeating the No. 22 Akron women\u2019s team, 174.5-124.5, and both the Denison squads. The men took down the Big Red by a score of 221-75, and the women downed the team, 224-75.<\/p>\n<p>The Buckeyes saw a plethora of season-bests, winning a total of 27 individual events and relays. The Spartan women beat the Ladies, 191-109, and the Spartan men beat Lords, 190-108.<\/p>\n<p>The men took home 15 first-place finishes and the women finished with nine.<\/p>\n<p>The Spartan women had four swimmers who took home first place finishes.<\/p>\n<p>Senior <strong>Ellie Roche<\/strong> came in first in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 1:04.28.<\/p>\n<p>Ending the meet with two first-place finishes was senior <strong>Emily Brunett<\/strong>. Brunett claimed the top spot in the 200 butterfly, 2:07.05, and the 100 butterfly, 58.04.<\/p>\n<p>Following her fellow seniors, sophomore <strong>Abbey Neveling<\/strong> finished in the top spot with a time of 2:21.59 in the 200 breaststroke.<\/p>\n<p>For the men&#8217;s team, the Spartans had four swimmers who captured two first-place finishes.<\/p>\n<p>Freshman <strong>Jonathan Lee<\/strong> claimed the top spot in both the 100 and 200 breaststroke. His times were 56.95 and 2:04.49, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>Junior <strong>Scott Piper<\/strong> took first in the 200 butterfly, 1:51.29, and the 400 IM, 4:04.11, while sophomore <strong>Charlie Ryan<\/strong> took first in the 100 and 200 backstroke with times of 50.89 and 1:52.66.<\/p>\n<p>Lastly with two first-place finishes was sophomore <strong>Aidan Farley<\/strong> in the 500 and 1000 free. His finished with times of 4:38.83 and 9:36.82.<\/p>\n<h3>Nebraska defeated by Kansas<\/h3>\n<p>The Nebraska swimming and diving team hosted the Kansas Jayhawks for their fourth dual meet of the season.
