﻿{"id":335117,"date":"2018-10-27T10:09:23","date_gmt":"2018-10-27T17:09:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=335117"},"modified":"2018-10-27T10:09:23","modified_gmt":"2018-10-27T17:09:23","slug":"twenty-named-to-swimming-australia-2018-world-championship-roster","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/twenty-named-to-swimming-australia-2018-world-championship-roster\/","title":{"rendered":"Twenty Named to Swimming Australia 2018 World Championship Roster"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Swimming Australia has announced a 20-strong squad for the upcoming FINA World Short Course Championships in Hangzhou, China in December.<\/p>\n<p>The team was named after three days of swimming at the Hancock Prospecting Australian Short Course Championships held at the Melbourne Sports and Aquatic Centre.<\/p>\n<p>Making their Australian Dolphins debut after solid swims in Melbourne this weekend are <strong>Nicholas Brown<\/strong> (UWA West Coast), <strong>Abbey Harkin<\/strong> (St Peters Western), <strong>Jorden Merrilees<\/strong> (Melbourne VicCentre) and <strong>Jenna Strauch<\/strong> (Bond), <strong>Cameron Jones<\/strong> (St Peters Western) <strong>David Schlicht<\/strong> (MLC), and <strong>Greyson Bell<\/strong> (TSS Aquatic).<\/p>\n<p>Brown swam to victory in the 200m butterfly on <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/cameron-mcevoy-returns-and-elijah-winnington-sets-world-junior-record-at-australian-short-course-championships\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">night one of the qualifying meet<\/a> with Harkin taking out the 400m individual medley on the same night.<\/p>\n<p>Merilees qualified for the team with his <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/australian-short-course-championships-emma-mckeon-mitch-larkin-win-twice\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">second place in the men\u2019s 200m backstroke on Friday night<\/a> along with Strauch whose win in the 200m breaststroke clinched her place.<\/p>\n<p>Jones made the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/2018-australian-short-course-championships-mcevoy-seebohm-titmus-win\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">qualifying time in men\u2019s 50m freestyle<\/a>, with Schlicht making the time for selection following his silver in the men\u2019s 400m IM.<\/p>\n<p>The team is also bolstered by the inclusion of triple Olympian and experienced short course campaigner <strong>Emily Seebohm<\/strong> (Brisbane Grammar), who picked up her 31st Australian short course title this weekend cementing her place as the Australian record holder.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Thomas Fraser-Holmes<\/strong> also makes his return to international swimming following his suspension, after his win in the men\u2019s 400m IM on the final night of swimming.<\/p>\n<p>Australian Head Coach <strong>Jacco Verhaeren<\/strong> said the team is a good mix of experience and athletes early in their careers.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">\u201cWe are half way into the Olympic cycle so this team will get some good race experience and take a lot out of being on team and training and preparing with this group of athletes. It is great to have the leadership of some really experienced multi-campaigners like Emily, Cam, and Mitch. To have athletes with that experience on team is a real plus for everyone. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: #000080;\">It is also fantastic to see Cam McEvoy make a return to the Dolphins team after three months working with his new coach <strong>Chris Nesbit<\/strong>.
