The Olympian also fielded questions about his son\u2019s own swimming while also shutting down the possibility of a 2020 Olympic comeback. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phelps recounts his own struggles with his mental health, including a low point in October of 2014 where he wouldn\u2019t leave his room for days after his arrest for driving under the influence of alcohol while speeding. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI was so down on myself,\u201d says the 28-time Olympic medalist in the below video clip tweeted out by the Today Show. \u201cI didn\u2019t have any self-love, and quite honestly I just didn\u2019t want to be alive.\u201d <\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-lang=\"en\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">\u201cI was so down on myself. I didn\u2019t have any self-love, and quite honestly I just didn\u2019t want to be alive.\u201d <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/MichaelPhelps?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@MichaelPhelps<\/a> talks about the difficult time in his life in Oct. 2014 <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/ky2gXOXHev\">pic.twitter.com\/ky2gXOXHev<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 TODAY (@TODAYshow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/TODAYshow\/status\/1055433796085039104?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">October 25, 2018<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><br \/>\n<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Phelps went on to say it was hitting rock bottom that made him realize that it was \u201cokay to not be okay,\u201d and take the step to ask for help. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And now, Phelps wants to help others do the same. \u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cBeing able to open up the conversation about it I think is something that\u2019s something that\u2019s so important.
