BY just a total of 11-hundredths of a second, two swimmers–both from Kennedy High School in Division 3–missed setting state records during the Washington Boys State High School Swimming and Diving Championships Feb. 15-16 in Federal Way. A total of seven division records fell.

Division 2
Archbishop Murray's squad collected 267 points to grab the team title. Senior Alec Barnard lowered his 2A mark in the 100 fly from 51.21 last year to this year's effort of 50.24. He also took down Braden Mitchell's time from 2012 (21.52) with his 21.45.

Barnard anchored both Wildcat division-setting relays. The team of senior Hunter Costrove, plus sophomores Stephen Boden and Austin Barnard, combined with Barnard for a 1:28.50 in the 200 medley relay, erasing Sehome's 1:29.31 from last year. The quartet also bettered the team's 2012 Division 2A mark of 3:15.52 with their 3:14.26.

Boden also claimed two event titles with his 1:56.38 in the 200 IM and 4:36.26 in the 500 free.

Steilacoom Junior Benjamin Scott scored a 2A standard with his 51.46 in the 100 back, removing Cole Avery's 52.23 from last year from the record book. Scott also triumphed in the 100 free (48.25).

Sehome finished a close second to Archbishop Murray with 237 points. They were led by 100 breast champion Patrick Gregory (59.12), who contributed to Sehome's winning 200 medley relay with seniors Andy Small and Isaac Day, plus sophomore Isaiah Grambo (1:41.91).

Rounding out the top five teams were Anacortes (197), Steilacoom (179) and Hockinson (156). Anacortes senior Ian Schleh topped the field in the 200 free (1:45.07) and Steilacoom's Rylan Korby, also a senior, scored 374.65 points to capture the diving event.

Division 3A
By just 8-hundredths of a second, Kennedy sophomore Tommy Thach missed setting a state record in the 200 IM. The record still stands at 1:49.30, set by Andy Lloyd back in 1988. However, he earned a Division 3A mark of 1:49.22 (erasing Owen Wurzbacher's 1:50.26 from 2009) and also came in first in the 100 free (45.47).

His teammate, senior Thane Maudslien, could definitely feel Thach's pain. Even more so, perhaps–his 48.56 in the 100 back was just 3-hundredths off Evan Martinec's 2000 state standard of 48.59. He did go faster than the Division 3 time of 49.12 by Whitney Wollard from 1993. Like Thach, Maudslien also swam to a second first-place finish with his 49.76 in the 100 fly.

The duo joined seniors Tharm Sribhibhadh and Nick Dorsett for a victorious 1:36.56 in the 200 medley relay. Mercer Island swept the freestyle relays. The quartet of juniors Noah Deiparine, Brandt Waesche and Karl MacLane combined with sophomore Ian Caldwell for a 1:27.30 in the 200 free relay; junior Andrew Weiss came on board with Deiparine, Waesche and Caldwell for a 3:09.57-3:09.64 triumph over Bellevue's squad of senior Matt Williams, freshman Daniel Prang plus juniors Michael Stanchi and Todd McCarthy.

Bellevue's McCarthy completed the 200 free in 1:41.02 to claim first. Also taking the top spot in their events were O'Dea senior Grant Neil (50 free, 21.13), Lakeside sophomore Abrahm Devine (500 free, 4:32.65) and Raymond Ha, a senior at Liberty (100 breast, 57.79). The diving champion was Kennedy senior Brian Donohue (430.45 points).

Lakeside eclipsed Mercer Island for first by just three points, 274-271. Bellevue cam ein third (248), followed by Kennedy (181) and O'Dea (125).

Division 4A
Two juniors took home first-place awards in two events each. Eastlake's Edward Kim cruised to a 20.11 in the 50 free and 48.00 in the 100 fly. Chase Bublitz from Kentridge posted winning swims of 45.21 in the 100 free and 1:39.51 in the 200 free.

Kamiak senior Liam Sosinsky provided the only individual title for the team with his 57.08 in the 100 breast. Kamiak's 400 free relay squad of senior John Stupey, sophomore Shelby Lee, freshman Henry Limm and sophomore Even Schumann tied with Stadium's team of seniors Logan Rysemus and Andrew Lackman, plus freshmen Josh Maclurg and Noah Willers in the 400 free relay, with each team posting a 3:13.03.

Stadium wound up second (170 points). In addition to their tie in the 400 free relay, the 200 medley relay of Rysemus, Maclurg, senior Nicholas Riggio and Lackman clocked 1:36.71 for first. Rysemus earned an individual title in the 200 IM (1:50.51).

Newport finished in third (163), just ahead of Issaquah (156). Gig Harbor claimed fifth place with 139 points.

Gig Harbor senior Evan Indahl came in first in the 500 free (4:37.23). Brian Woodbury, a junior at Curtis, posted a 49.99 to take the 100 back. Max Levy, a Skyline senior, was the top 4A diver with his 463.50 points.

Issaquah's 200 free relay came in first (1:28.95) with the quartet of seniors William Matsuda and Spencer McCulloh, along with sophomores Gabe Florsheim and Henry Pratt.

FEDERAL WAY, Washington, February 21.
