WESTERN Albemarle claimed the girls team title, and Hidden Valley was the top boys team, at the Virginia A-AA State High School Championships Feb.15-16. <\/p>\n<p><b>Girls<\/b><br \/>\nWestern Albemarle combined for 210 points, followed by Cave Spring (196) and Lafayette (139). Tabb grabbed fourth (135), with William Byrd edging out Jefferson Forest for fifth, 127-125.5.<\/p>\n<p>Cave Springs&#039; 200 free relay of Maggie Harman, Tessa Muzzy, Lauren Cowher and Hailey Bivens lowered the state 1A-2A record Cave Springs set last year (1:37.12) to 1:36.92. They also combined for a 1:48.31 victory in the 200 medley relay. Individually, Cowher took the 50 free (24.17) and Bivens the 100 free (52.78). <\/p>\n<p>Kaleigh Rosenberg of Heritage set the only individual girls standard with her 1:02.12 in the 100 breast, taking down Susanna White&#039;s 1:02.78 from 2011. Rosenberg also placed first in the 200 IM with her 2:04.25. <\/p>\n<p>York&#039;s Mary Elizabeth Warhol also claimed two titles, posting times of 1:50.95 in the 200 free and 56.23 in the 100 back. <\/p>\n<p>Remedy Rule of West Albemarle came in first in the 100 breast (55.68) and Spotswood&#039;s Jessie Arnold&#039;s 4:56.92 gave her the 500 free victory. Arnold anchored Spotswood&#039;s victorious 400 free relay of Julia Sheffer, Emily Smith and Olivia Sheffer.<\/p>\n<p><b>Boys<\/b><br \/>\nGrafton&#039;s 200 free relay of Jonathan Spires, Tyler Titsch, Marcus Quint and Andrew Ferguson set the only boys division record this year with their 1:27.10. Brentsville District had held the record of 1:27.43 since 2011. They also combined for a winning 3:12.42 in the 400 free relay.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden Valley grabbed the 200 medley relay with the quartet of Will Moles, Ben Schmidt, Peter D&#039;Ortenzio and Jacob Gibbs (1:38.66). Gibbs topped the field in the 100 free (47.61), and placed a very close second to Staunton River&#039;s Zachary Dehli in the 50 free, 21.56-21.64.<\/p>\n<p>Lafayette&#039;s Carter Kale captured both the 200 IM (1:54.64) and the 500 free (4:39.78). Ben Kennedy of Glenvar also secured wins in two events&#8211;the 100 back (52.85) and the 100 fly, finishing 2-hundredths ahead of Lafayette&#039; Carter Stulen (51.43-51.45).<\/p>\n<p>Tabb&#039;s Trevor Jones came in first in the 100 back (59.15) and Brad Allison of James Monroe&#039;s 1:43.73 gave him the 200 free win.<\/p>\n<p>Hidden Valley edged Lafayette for the team title, 195-185.5. Western Albemarle finished third (147.5). By just 1-1\/2 points, Tabb claimed fourth over Grafton (123.5-122).<\/p>\n<p><b>Diving<\/b><br \/>\nChristianburg divers swept the diving competition. The brother-sister combo of Leah (482.95) and Ronnie (511.45) both bettered their state records.
