MANOA, Hawaii, February 20. THE Duke Kahanamoku Aquatic Complex on the grounds of the University of Hawaii-Manoa served as the site of the Hawaii State Swimming and Diving State Championships Feb. 15-16. The Mid-Pacific Institute (girls) and Kamehameha Schools-Kapalama (boys) captured the team titles.<\/p>\n
Girls<\/b>
\nMid-Pacific Institute swimmers combined for 54.5 points, ahead of Kealakehe (38.5), Punahou (37), Iolani (27) and Kawai (23). MPI's team of sophomores Rebecca Walton, Lena Hayakawa, Gayla McQuaid, plus junior Summer Harrison on the third leg, combined for a winning 1:48.30 in the 200 medley relay. They also put together a winning 3:34.53 in the 400 free relay. Individually, Harrison captured the 100 free in 51.96, Hayakawa was tops in the 200 free (1:53.31) with Walton second (1:54.81).<\/p>\n
Punahou's Jasmine Mau, a junior, was the only swimmer to celebrate twice with winning swims of 2:01.78 in the 200 IM and 52.78 in the 100 fly. <\/p>\n
Junior Cara Jernigan led off Kealakehe's winning 200 free relay, followed by sophomore Sarah Somsanquansit, junior Leahi Camacho and senior Madison-Gail Hauanio. The four combined for a 1:38.70. Jernigan's 1:05.00 in the 100 breast gave her the victory, 5-hundredths ahead of MPI's Hayawaka. <\/p>\n
Kauai sophomore Yasmine Ware sped to a 23.75 clocking in the 50 free; on the other end of the spectrum, Iolani sophomore Sydney Kimura's 5:02.74 earned her first place in the 500 free. Anu Nihipali, a senior at Hawaii Prep, claimed the 100 back with her 57.45.<\/p>\n
Boys<\/b>
\nKamehameha Schools Kapalama (KSK) scored 60 points for the boys title. Their 200 medley relay of seniors Sean Terada, Kevin Hartley and Kaikena Naone, along with sophomore Kanoa Kaleoaloha, put together a 1:36.22.<\/p>\n
Junior Ryan Stack and senior Kale Ai joined Naone and Kaleoaloha for the 200 free relay (1:24.56). Naone, Kaleoaloha, Ai and Stack's 3:06.69 earned them first in the 400 free relay and completed the relay sweep. Ai completed the 500 free in 4:32.78 for the victory and Stack conquered the 200 free in 1:39.80.<\/p>\n
Punahou's 47 points gave them the second spot in the team race. Noah Deer, a junior, put together wins in both the 50 (20.87) and 100 (45.70) free. Also claiming two titles was Island Pacific Academy senior Austin Hirstein with his 1:50.44 in the 200 IM and and 55.91 in the 100 breast.<\/p>\n
Seabury Hall senior Renny Richmond posted a winning 48.81 in the 100 fly, as did Makoa Alvarez, a sophomore at Campbell in the 100 back (52.10).<\/p>\n
Mililani's depth enabled them to take third with 22 points, followed by Seabury Hall (18) and Hilo grabbed fifth (15).<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
