HALF of the top 20 women&#039;s NCAA water polo programs competed at the Triton Invitational Feb. 9-10. The tournament was hosted by UC San Diego and was held at their Triton and Canyonview pools. But there was also plenty of action throughout the United States this past weekend.<\/p>\n<p><b>Triton Invitational, Feb. 9-10, San Diego, California<\/b><br \/>\nCompeting in Group A were second-ranked USC, No. 16 Hartwick, No. 17 CSU Northridge and Cal State University East Bay. Fifth-ranked Arizona State headed Group B with No. 15 Loyola-Marymount, No. 19 UC San Diego and Marist. Group C consisted of No. 6 UC Irvine, No. 13 UC Santa Barbara, Cal State Bakersfield and Sonoma State. Making up Group D were 10th-ranked Michigan, No. 17 San Diego State, Santa Clara and Cal State University Long Beach.<\/p>\n<p>The final round of games included:<br \/>\nPlaces 14-15 Marist def. Santa Clara 8-7<br \/>\nPlaces 13-14 Hartwick def. Sonoma State 12-9<br \/>\nPlaces 11-12 CSU Bakersfield def. CSU East Bay 10-8<br \/>\nPlaces 9-10 Loyola-Marymount def. Michigan 9-7<br \/>\nPlaces 7-8 Cal State Northridge def. UC San Diego 9-7<br \/>\nPlaces 5-6 Cal State Long Beach def. UC Santa Barbara 9-7<br \/>\nThird place game UC Irvine def. San Diego State 9-5<br \/>\nChampionship game USC def. California prevailed, 7-5. <\/p>\n<p>Saturday saw a full slate of action. Cal had no trouble at all in defeating Harvard (14-5), Villanova (22-1) and George Washington (21-6). Princeton also collected a trifecta of wins with their victories over Villanova (15-3), George Washington (20-6) and Harvard (11-7).<\/p>\n<p>On Sunday, Harvard, Princeton and George Washington competed against New York Athletic Club in exhibition matches. Villanova lost twice to George Washington (14-9) and Harvard (19-4).<\/p>\n<p><b>Brown Classic, Feb. 9-10, Providence, Rhode Island<\/b><br \/>\nThe Brown Classic fell victim to the major snowstorm that hit the region last weekend. Bucknell and St. Francis, slated to compete in the tournament, cancelled their participation. That left a restructured schedule. <\/p>\n<p>On Saturday, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps defeated Colorado State in overtime, 10-8. Brown lost a pair of contests to Wagner (8-7) and Colorado State (10-9). Wagner ended the evening with a 14-7 victory over Claremont-Mudd-Scripps.<\/p>\n<p>Wagner went through the tournament undefeated with Sunday&#039;s 9-5 win over Colorado State. Brown ended the regular portion with their 14-8 victory over Claremont-Mudd Scripps. The Brown Bears, due to the goal differential between themselves, Claremont-Mudd-Scripps and Colorado State, earned their way to the championship game against Wagner. Brown avenged their defeat with a 5-4 triumph.<\/p>\n<p><b>Matches<\/b><br \/>\nThere were also several single-game matches this past weekend.<\/p>\n<p>Top-ranked Stanford rolled over the UC Davis Aggies, 15-4. The Cardinal was led by senior Melissa Seidemann and freshman Maggie Steffens, both of whom scored three goals. Kaley Dodson, Kiley Neushul and Anna Yelizarova contributed two goals apiece. Sophomore Emily Dorst and freshman Gabby Stone shared goalie duties, combining for five goals.<\/p>\n<p>UCLA, third in the nation, had an easy time of it in their home opener against California Lutheran, putting up an 18-3 victory. Four Bruins scored hat tricks: senior Gisselle Naranio, sophomores Emily Donohoe and Danielle Ferraro, and freshman Alys Williams.<\/p>\n<p>No. 8 San Jose State  hosted a Canadian junior national team from British Columbia Feb. 9. San Jose State earned a 13-6 victory. Spartan freshman Rae Likness scored four goals and classmate Kelli Leabo added three. Dona Momen scored four goals for the Canadians and teammate Hayley McKelvey put the other two goals in the net.<\/p>\n<p>Hawaii (9), Indiana (11), and Pacific (16) did not compete this past weekend.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX, Arizona, February 13.
