DOUBLE Paralympic champion Brad Snyder received the Juan Antonio Samarach Disabled Athlete Award, not only for his exploits in the pool, but his bravery and heroics away from it.<\/p>\n<p>In August 2011, Snyder was permanently blinded when he stepped on an improvised explosive device while serving in the Navy in Afghanistan. Exactly one year later, he was on the awards stand at the London Paralympics, claiming the title in the 400 freestyle in the S11 category, which includes visually-impaired athletes. Snyder also won gold in the 100 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>According to Inside the Games, Snyder was presented with the award by Naval Academy cross country coach Al Cantello at a dual meet hosted by the Naval Academy.<\/p>\n<p>Snyder continues to train, and will likely be a strong presence this year at the disabled world championships.<\/p>\n<p><a href=http:\/\/www.insidethegames.biz\/paralympics\/summer-sports\/swimming\/1012849-double-paralympic-swimming-champion-snyder-receives-2012-juan-antonio-samaranch-disabled-athlete-award target=\"_blank\">Full text of Inside the Games article<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>PHOENIX, Arizona, February 12.
