VICTORIA, BC \u2013 Simon Fraser University Clan posted impressive results in their first meet of the season Saturday at the Saanich Commonwealth Place. The Clan dominated both relays in both genders putting up spectacular performances right off the bat, and following suit in the final event of the evening.<\/p>\n
The meet started and finished with relays, first the 4×50 meter freestyle relay. On the women\u2019s team, Jessie Gibson<\/strong>, Kaleigh Sharkey<\/strong>, Kristen Olvet<\/strong> and Sara Whelan<\/strong> putting up a strong time of 1:48.06, two seconds faster than their seed time while the men\u2019s team composed of Adrian Vanderhelm<\/strong>, Gabriel Lee<\/strong>, Mathew Fuller<\/strong> and Kiriakos Papaggelis<\/strong> clocked 1:33.97, five seconds faster than expected. Both teams touching the wall first.<\/p>\n While the individual events proceeded the first relays, the meet ended with the 4×50 medley relay, where the Clan did not lose its tempo both teams winning their respective races. On the women\u2019s side, Gibson, Jordan Doner<\/strong>, Sharkey and Whelan touching the wall in a time of 1:59.43, ahead of second Clan team, Kennedy Loewen<\/strong>, Victoria Von Sacken Nash<\/strong>, Lawrance, and Katie Rosychuk<\/strong> in a time of 2:04.17.<\/p>\n The men\u2019s team grabbed the top three spots in the relay event to finish off the meet with a bang. First place finishers included Cole, Marino, Vanderhelm and Fuller, winning in 1:45.66.<\/p>\n Top individual performances for the team in their first meet include Vanderhelm coming out of a red shirt year with a 1st place finish in the 100 meter freestyle in a time of 50.79, and a second place finish in the 200 meter IM in a time of 2:02.82, ahead of teammate Gabriel Lee, coming in 3rd in a time of 2:05.81.<\/p>\n The men\u2019s team had top finishes by Antonio Marino<\/strong>, placing first in the 100 meter breaststroke in a time of 1:04.60, and also touching the wall in second in the 200 meter breaststroke with a 2:22.00.<\/p>\n Freshman Mathew Fuller<\/strong> placed 2nd in the 100 meter freestyle in 51.24, and third in the 200 meter freestyle in 1:52.61, ahead of senior Mackenzie Hamill<\/strong> who finished 4th in 1:54.83 in the same event.<\/p>\n Collyn Gagne<\/strong>, Jimmy Zhang<\/strong>,\u00a0and Jayden Cole<\/strong> took home top three finishes in the 200 meter backstroke, in times of 2:03.09, 2:04.46, and 2:06.09, respectively. Zhang went on to win the 100 meter backstroke in 56.61.<\/p>\n The men\u2019s butterfly events were also taken by SFU athletes. Amar Fejzic<\/strong> touching the wall first in the 100 meter fly in a time of 57.29, and freshman Rafik Jiwa<\/strong> taking the 200 meter in 2:09.21.<\/p>\n The Woinoski brothers, Andrew and Tim, finished 1st and 3rd in the 400 IM at the end of the day in 4:34.85 and 4:44.24, respectively.<\/p>\n The women\u2019s side had strong performances too, including senior Sara Whelan<\/strong>, taking home the 200 meter freestyle in 2:05.42, and placing 4th in the 100 free in 57.70.
