From regional league championship meets that allow swimmers to face friendly age-group competition to challenging but achievable national qualification standards, the Y provides many opportunities for swimmers.<\/p>\n<p>This is not to discredit USA Swimming, however. At around 400,000 swimmers strong, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/Home\/about\/usa-swimming\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Swimming<\/a> provides its own benefits for athletes.<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach of the York and York County YMCA<strong> John Nelson<\/strong> explains, however, that YMCA swimming has a bit of an edge over USA: \u201cA YMCA can provide USA Swimming, but USA Swimming can\u2019t provide what YMCA swimming can.&#8221; So what does a YMCA swim team provide? You don\u2019t have a big registration fee.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This is perhaps why Olympic Gold Medalist <a href=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?s=mark+spitz\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><strong>Mark Spitz<\/strong>\u00a0<\/a>learned to swim at the Sacramento YMCA back in 1958. There are also little to no fees to compete in league meets in addition to the chance to be matched up during age-group competition. \u201cTwo YMCA teams can duel each other, and they don\u2019t have to pay a fee,\u201d said Nelson. \u201cThey have the structure in place to make it very accessible to the whole world.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Head Coach of the Hilliard Ray Patch YMCA <strong>Brian Dickmann<\/strong>\u00a0also expresses the value in these league meets. \u201cThe dual meets and association invitationals provide a great outlet for competition on the local level,\u201d said Dickmann.<\/p>\n<h3><strong>The Qualification Standards are Achievable<\/strong><\/h3>\n<div id=\"attachment_334150\" style=\"width: 710px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-334150\" data-attachment-id=\"334150\" data-permalink=\"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/its-fun-to-swim-at-the-ymca\/ymca-nationals-3\/\" data-orig-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ymca-nationals-e1553719534154.jpg\" data-orig-size=\"800,827\" data-comments-opened=\"1\" data-image-meta=\"{&quot;aperture&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;credit&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;camera&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;caption&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;created_timestamp&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;copyright&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;focal_length&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;iso&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;shutter_speed&quot;:&quot;0&quot;,&quot;title&quot;:&quot;&quot;,&quot;orientation&quot;:&quot;0&quot;}\" data-image-title=\"ymca nationals\" data-image-description=\"&lt;p&gt;3\/27\/20&lt;br \/&gt;\nymca nationals&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-image-caption=\"&lt;p&gt;Photo Courtesy: Alex Waldron&lt;\/p&gt;\n\" data-medium-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ymca-nationals-e1540222497545-700x500.jpg\" data-large-file=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ymca-nationals-e1540222497545-991x1024.jpg\" class=\"wp-image-334150 size-medium\" src=\"https:\/\/vmrw8k5h.tinifycdn.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/10\/ymca-nationals-e1540222497545-700x500.jpg\" alt=\"ymca nationals\" width=\"700\" height=\"500\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-334150\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Photo Courtesy: Alex Waldron<\/p><\/div>\n<p>Arguably one of the biggest advantages of YMCA swimming are the qualification time standards for the short course and long course national meets. \u201cA huge advantage of that <a href=\"http:\/\/ymca.ymcaswimminganddiving.org\/displaypage.asp?Cat=2019SC\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">meet<\/a> is that it gets you exposed to a national championship without having to be crazy fast,\u201d explained Nelson. \u201cIf you look at the long course Junior cuts, they are right off of Olympic Trials cuts.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn regards to the comparisons between YMCA and USA Swimming, the times needed to qualify for the Y Nats meet are historically easier to make than Junior Nationals on the USA side,\u201d said Dickmann. \u201cThat really is the only difference at the national level; there have been numerous national age group records set at the meet.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He\u2019s right: when looking at the difference in time standards between the\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/ymca.ymcaswimminganddiving.org\/nats\/2019SC\/2019ShortCourseQualifyingTimes-2.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">YMCA National Meet<\/a>\u00a0and the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.usaswimming.org\/Home\/times\/time-standards\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">USA Speedo Winter Junior Championships<\/a>, there is a significant gap.<\/p>\n<p>Despite this gap, Nelson re-emphasizes that the strength of the YMCA National Meet has never been compensated: \u201cA lot of times in the 200 IM the 400 IM, these events are being won with times faster than the actual Winter Juniors. The team atmosphere of YMCA Nationals is biggest draw.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Nelson agrees, explaining that YMCA Nationals allows his entire team to have a championship experience. \u201cWe do have swimmers that could go to Juniors, but we only have four or five of those kids,\u201d said Nelson. \u201cThis way we can take 20 kids to a national championship, and I think that\u2019s a big advantage the YMCA has.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Dickmann also brings up the element of fun that YMCA Nationals provides for its athletes such as the Athlete Village &#8211; a place for swimmers to camp out between events. \u201cThe Athlete Village is a subculture upon itself.
