﻿{"id":334026,"date":"2018-10-21T16:29:50","date_gmt":"2018-10-21T23:29:50","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/?p=334026"},"modified":"2018-10-21T16:29:50","modified_gmt":"2018-10-21T23:29:50","slug":"big-12-recap-texas-women-top-indiana-and-florida-in-double-dual","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/news\/big-12-recap-texas-women-top-indiana-and-florida-in-double-dual\/","title":{"rendered":"Big 12 Recap: Texas Women Top Indiana and Florida in Double Dual"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><em>By Jason Tillotson.\u00a0<\/em><\/p>\n<p>Around the Big 12 there was an array of exciting meets this week, with Texas hosting their annual double dual meet with Indiana and Florida, the men and women from West Virginia University hosting Seton Hall and Xavier, in their annual two-day double dual and some action out west with Iowa State taking the stage this weekend against South Dakota and South Dakota State.<\/p>\n<h3>Texas Women Win, Men Lose to IU and UF<\/h3>\n<p>Scores:<\/p>\n<p>Men<\/p>\n<p>Texas 119.00, Indiana 234.00<\/p>\n<p>Texas 175.00, Florida 178.00<\/p>\n<p>Women<\/p>\n<p>Texas 201, Indiana 147<\/p>\n<p>Texas 222, Florida 126<\/p>\n<p>For full results, click <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/texassports_com\/documents\/2018\/10\/20\/full_meet_results.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana started out the meet with a dominant lead by winning both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s 400 medley relay in 3:11.38 and 3:36.59, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The Texas women were able to bounce back by winning the next two events, the 200 free with <strong>Joanna Evans<\/strong> posting an NCAA B cut time of 1:47.07, and the 100 back with <strong>Claire<\/strong> <strong>Adams<\/strong> touching first in 53.52.<\/p>\n<p>Indiana&#8217;s <strong>Lilly King<\/strong> was the only woman to dip under the 1:00 barrier in the 100 breaststroke with a time of 59.46, while Texas Longhorn <strong>Olivia Anderson<\/strong> touched second in a 1:01.88. King went on to win the 200 breast as well with a 2:11.32.<\/p>\n<p>The Hoosiers continued their breaststroke dominance with commanding victory from <strong>Ian<\/strong> <strong>Finnerty<\/strong> who won the men&#8217;s 100 breast in 53.49 with Florida&#8217;s <strong>Stanley Wu<\/strong> well behind in 55.22. Finnerty also won the 200 distance in a time of 2:00.05.<\/p>\n<p>Longhorn freshman duo of <strong>Julia Cook<\/strong> (22.72) and <strong>Grace Ariola<\/strong> (22.77) took 1-2 in the women&#8217;s 50 freestyle.<\/p>\n<p>Longhorn senior Evans went on to win the rest of the middle-distance freestyle events for Texas by posting times of 4:45.58 and 9:50.81 in the 500 and 1000 distances, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The University of Florida men didn&#8217;t see their first victory of the meet until the 500 freestyle where Gator duo of <strong>Khader Baqlah<\/strong> (4:24.25) and <strong>Trey Freeman<\/strong> (4:25.16) touched first and second, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The Gator women also produced a win in the women&#8217;s 400 IM with <strong>Kelly Fertel<\/strong> putting together a 4:12.25. Gator senior <strong>Grant Sanders<\/strong> (3:50.61) turned in the nation&#8217;s fastest time so far this season on his way to winning the men&#8217;s 400 IM for Florida.<\/p>\n<p>Longhorn senior<strong> Quinn Carrozza<\/strong> turned in a win for the Texas ladies in the 200 back with her 1:55.99.<\/p>\n<p>Texas continued to roll in the men&#8217;s 200 back with a 1-2 finish from <strong>Ryan Harty<\/strong> (1:44.08) and <strong>Austin Katz<\/strong> (1:44.44).<\/p>\n<p>Indiana closed out the meet by winning both the men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s 400 free relay in times of 2:54.78 and 3:22.84, respectively.<\/p>\n<h3>WVU Beats Seton Hall and Xavier<\/h3>\n<p>Scores:<\/p>\n<p>Men<\/p>\n<p>WVU 241, Xavier 52<\/p>\n<p>WVU 235, Seton Hall 64<\/p>\n<p>Women<\/p>\n<p>WVU 217, Seton Hall 82<\/p>\n<p>WVU 199.5, Xavier 93.5<\/p>\n<p>For full results, click <a href=\"https:\/\/s3.amazonaws.com\/sidearm.sites\/wvuni.sidearmsports.com\/documents\/2018\/10\/20\/WVU_SHU_XU_all_sessions.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">here<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>West Virginia University&#8217;s men&#8217;s and women&#8217;s swimming and diving teams came together to win 15 of 16 total events to produce a win of over Seton Hall and Xavier.<\/p>\n<p>Saturday&#8217;s competition was highlighted by senior diver<strong> Averly Hobbs<\/strong>\u00a0winning the women&#8217;s 1-meter event. Hobbs earned a winning score of 312.89, besting the previous WVU record of 297.45, set by <strong>Haily VanderPoel<\/strong> in 2014.<\/p>\n<p>The lady Mountaineers took a 1-2 finish in the 200 free with <strong>Lauryn Kallay<\/strong> (1:52.16) and <strong>Luisa Winkler<\/strong> (1:54.95) and did so again in the 100 back with a 56.37 from <strong>Julia Miranda<\/strong> and a 57.27 from <strong>Ally Vannetta<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p>On the men&#8217;s side WVU duo of <strong>Merwane Elmerini<\/strong> (20.36, 45.58) and <strong>Drew Damich<\/strong> (21.01, 45.93) produced a 1-2 finish in both the 50 and 100 freestyle events.<\/p>\n<p>Next on WVU&#8217;s schedule is a visit to Villanova next Saturday.<\/p>\n<h3>Iowa State Tops South Dakota and SDSU<\/h3>\n<p>Scores<\/p>\n<p>Iowa State 146, South Dakota 97<\/p>\n<p>The Cyclones started their night off strong with the 400 medley relay team of <strong>Emily Haan<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Martha Haas<\/strong>,\u00a0<strong>Elyyn Tann<\/strong>\u00a0and <strong>Anna Anderson<\/strong>\u00a0breaking a pool record by over six seconds with a 4:18.58. The previous pool record was set in 2015 by a Northern Iowa relay squad. The Iowa State &#8216;B&#8217; relay took second place with a 4:24.07, a time that would have beaten the previous pool record.<\/p>\n<p>In the 800 free, <strong>Keely Soellner\u00a0<\/strong>and <strong>Kat Jones<\/strong>\u00a0finished first and second, Jones using the final length to beat South Dakota&#8217;s <strong>Jordan Thielbar<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Emma Ruehle<\/strong>\u00a0took first in the 200 free, followed by\u00a0<strong>Polina Shynkarenkoin<\/strong> second.\u00a0<strong>Lucia Rizzo<\/strong>\u00a0was behind by over a second headed into the freestyle leg of the 200 IM, but stormed back to give the Cyclones another event victory heading into the first diving break.<\/p>\n<p>Rizzo\u00a0took second in the 200 fly, followed by an\u00a0<strong>Elynn Tan<\/strong>\u00a0victory in the 100 free, touching in 59.67.\u00a0. At the second diving break, Iowa State led 106-82.<\/p>\n<p>In the diving well,\u00a0<strong>Dana Liv<\/strong>a\u00a0took first on the one-meter (264.98) and third on the three\u00ad-meter board (255.75), with\u00a0<strong>Sydney Ronald<\/strong>\u00a0right behind her on the one-meter (250.13).
