IN one of the most exciting high school championships so far this season, four national records were broken and nine meet records were taken down at the 2013 Metro Championships.<\/p>\n<p>Stone Ridge sophomore Katie Ledecky bettered two national marks, missing the American record by 91-hundreds with her 4:31.38 in the 500 yard free. That lowered the prelim swim posted during prelims the previous evening. She also lowered Missy Franklin&#039;s national independent mark of 1:43.15 in the 200 free with her 1:42.96.<\/p>\n<p>Full coverage of Ledecky&#039;s swims:<br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/HighSchool\/33382.asp target=_blank>Prelims<\/a><br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/HighSchool\/33390.asp target=_blank>Finals<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Good Counsel senior Jack Conger also lowered the overall national record in the 500 free, posted in 1983 of 4:16.39 by Jeff Kostoff with his 4:13.87. It also cleared out Conger&#039;s national independent record of 4:17.91 from last year. He came close to breaking a second mark in the 100 back, finishing the race in 46.76. Conger ledoff Good Counsel&#039;s 400 free relay in a national independent mark of 42.81.<\/p>\n<p>Full coverage of Conger&#039;s swims:<br \/>\n<a href=http:\/\/www.swimmingworldmagazine.com\/lane9\/news\/HighSchool\/33391.asp target=_blank>Finals<\/a> <\/p>\n<p>Wootton High School had incentive to win this year&#039;s competition. Last April the team&#039;s coach, Howard Blume passed away after his 14th season with the team. Wootton captured this year&#039;s team race over a determined Churchill squad, 392-386. Wootton was led by junior Kristina Li, who set meet records in the 100 fly (55.05) and the 100 back (54.40). <\/p>\n<p>Holton Arms&#039; Caroline McTaggart took charge of the sprint free with her 23.15 in the 50 free and 49.72 in the 100 free. Churchill&#039;s Kali Becker won the diving competition with 420.15 points.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzaga&#039;s 340.5 points gave them the boys&#039; third straight team title over Georgetown Prep (320), despite losing 15 seniors last season. They were led by double event champions Grant Goddard (200 free, 1:39.67 and 100 fly, 50.66) and Carsten Vissering (200 IM, 1:51.01 and 100 breast, 54.94). Vissering&#039;s prelim swim of 54.71 in the 100 breast set a meet record.<\/p>\n<p>Gonzaga&#039;s Paul O&#039;Hara&#039;s 20.57 in the 50 free earned him the victory in that event. He tied with Walter Johnson&#039;s Barry Mangold in the 100 free, each swimming 45.83. <\/p>\n<p>T.J.
